Do you get points on your licence for going through a red light?
Many Thanks
You'll get 3 points on licence--you will also have fine £60
that's what I had for doing 35 mph on main wide road the
limit had been reduced from 40 to 30 mph and I hadn't noticed.Send a private mail to let me know how you get on!

If I'm right 12 points means losing your license. So 4 red lights in 3 years and you lost it? Wow, if they'd do that in Holland then it would soon be really quiet on the road.
In Holland you'll lose your license after 3 points, but you can get 1 point at a time and just for the following offences:
speeding with 30 km/h or more above the speed limit
0,8 promille alcohol or more (0,5 is the maximum, between those 2 it's just a fine)
not keeping distance (and then for the really extreme cases)
causing an accident with deaths and/or serious injuries
And those things can still be done twice without losing your license.
My driving instructor told me that you were allowed to go through the lights if they change just as your about to go through, but posts here seem to think differently

You can proceed through an amber light only if it would be unsafe to stop, red means stop. If you go through a red you are committing an offence, that's why we have an amber phase.
Many traffic lights have cameras ABOVE them...watch when you are stuck at the lights for little black boxes on the top...and some of them are positioned at the side to get a nice photograph of you when you are driving off.
Edinburgh has loads of them
They aren't cameras, they are microwave detectors which are one of the types of vehicle sensor used on traffic signals.
Cameras are great big grey (or sometimes coloured) boxes on seperate posts facing across the junction, not at the approaching traffic.
If you want to know where the red light cameras are in Edinburgh they are all listed here (and there aren't really that many).
Basically if you are following the speed limit, then you have plenty of time to stop or carry on if nessesary.
Remember amber means STOP...not CARRY ON!
You clearly don't drive
Even if you are doing the speed limit, if you have some prat right up your behind, then stopping for the lights can cause you to be hit from behind. I've had that a few times, and have ended up going through just as the light goes red. Luckily I've gotten away with it.

I would have thought you will also have to pay £60 fine. This
is the usual penalty for over 30 mph or going through a red
light.Haven't you heard yet from the D.L.S.C. or Police? I say
prepare for the above---if you get away with only points on
your licence--you will be lucky...Actually this sounds like one
of previous mails. Was that you too?Naughty...Naughty..
Resurrecting this thread as I have just got a notice of intended prosecution and I am pretty naive about these sorts of things (8 years driving and no points until now).
Is this likely to increase my insurance premium and if, so, by how much approx.

Depends on your insurance company.
I wrote to mine to inform them that I had another 3 points (now have 6 )
I have just renewed it and the premium hasn't gone up

so you can safely brake from 40mph to zero in three seconds can you (3 seconds per amber) even if the lights are in a 30 40 50 60 or 70 zone, it should be 1 second of amber per 10 miles an hour for the road it is on and not 3 seconds no matter what
Anyone who drives through red lights should be banned for a few months never mind given points. I stepped out into the road with my son yesterday when the lights changed to red but yet some idiot zoomed past.
I was sitting on a bus at a 4-way junction and just as the lights changed to red-amber, a car turned the corner from the way that had just changed to red.
Bear in mind there's a second or so of a delay between one set turning red and the other turning red-amber...
I'd like it if they put a countdown timer on the lights of, say, 5 seconds, counting down to tell you when it's next going to change. I hate approaching lights when they've been on green a while (particularly while I was learning to drive), because sod's law states that they'll always change at the worst possible moment.
I know you're supposed to anticipate them changing, but it'd be quite useful to not have it happen off of a sudden, so you have some warning and can plan any action a little bit more in advance.
In that situation, I decide as I'm approaching at what point I would carry on if the lights changed to red. This point would vary depending on speed, weather conditions, whether or not there was someone on my tail etc. Doesn't everybody do this?

Go to court.
If they dont have the photographic evidence, which they often dont ,you'll get off.

Thats your own fault probably.
Thats why there are separate lights for pedestrians to look at.
You shouldn't be looking at lights intended for drivers.
If the drivers lights changed to red and the pedestrian lights then changed to green and a driver still went through then he may have been caught anyway

I once went to cross the road at a set of lights...they'd changed to red for the cars and the green man just appeared. I got across the first lane then all of a sudden this stupid bint who wasn't watching the road sped (not just drove) straight through and was within half a yard of knocking me over. There's cameras on the crossing, so I hope she was hammered.
Needless to say, it gave me one hell of a shock and I couldn't stop thinking what would have happened if I'd stepped out a second earlier.
I got 3 points & a £60 fine for going through a red light a couple of years ago. And according to the photos i asked for from the camera it was 1 SECOND after the lights had changed!!!!
1 second is a lot in distance terms if you're doing 30 miles an hour. Did you not see it go to amber? You must have plenty of time to stop so I don't know why you are so mad.

Maybe you should look before you cross then? Don't assume that because the lights are on red that its automatically safe to cross.

The green starts to flash about 10-15 seconds before the change. It works well.

Yes, it's usually three f***ing points.;)
valid for 3 years and you cant remove them for 4 years

It used to be the case that, if a driver went through on red, it was with the light going red as they crossed the stop line.
Nowadays, people are going through 2 and 3 seconds after the red light comes on.
I've witnessed a few very near misses, caused by red light jumpers.

They rely on people taking the easy way out.
It wont affect your premium.
