ETTC is on my TV now....is there anyone out there who watches it? and why, please? just wondering. I thought 'Antiques whatever we can do next on the subject of Antiques' was bad, but this is pretty dire. The voices, the people, the presenter....good grief!

I think this has been realised for years but why would the BBC air something different? Ratings are good and therefore it remains. Haha, I don't ever watch BBC in day time but clearly lots do.

It is indeed in the TV top five of yawn inducing trauma programming.

My wife has this on whilst she's reading the paper.

She says the majority of people are middle aged and older.
They want something in the country with privacy, then complain what they are shown is too far from the shops!

The want a "traditional" cottage and then complain about the low ceilings.
"She" wants a big kitchen. But it's for the two of them.
They want a big garden, but seem oblivious of how much work that will entail.
It seems most, just want to be "on telly."

I'd say Question Time is more boring!

I like it, mainly because I would like to move to the country and I like a nose around the properties. I don't watch any other property progs and I don't go out of my way to watch this one. They could cut out all the padding, I don't need to see the couple or the presenter making candles in Nether Wallop. Some of the presenters are hard work. I think I only see the old repeats as the properties seem to be 2011. The couples are invariably dull and seem to think, in that British way, that you must not show any enthusiasm. They could show them the most magnificent property and all they say is, that is quite nice, everything is quite nice, rather than amazing or beautiful. Some of the budgets they have to spend can be astonishing. How do some people amass all that money?

I suppose it might be interesting if you've got £500,000 to a £million to spend. Unfortunately, I'm not in that bracket.
I quite like things like A Place in The Sun, and other overseas property programmes. You see some fantastic properties, in beautiful locations, for the price of a small studio flat in London.

Heir Hunters is the most boring programme ever, I saw a few, same thing every show:

Team get a list to look at
Team reject ones that won't make anything
Camera shows people on the phone.
Camera shows people in the office not doing much.
Team goto a house talk to someone
    Show ends.

Couldn't they just! I watch, but only to see the actual properties, (probably out of mild curiosity/jealousy that they all seem to be places I could never personally afford :(). I tend to record this programme and only watch the actual property viewing bits, skipping the rest. Skipping all the re-caps and padding it out bits tends to mean you can watch the programme in about 5-7 minutes on average. :D

My question is "why would anyone want to watch football"??

I think that programme where couples can't decide whether to live in the UK or abroad is the most boring.

Can't the retired couples see the disadvantages of living in an isolated Spanish village thousands of miles away from their families ? ( Although perhaps they don't get on )

Wanted Down Under is another one that annoys me, what a good idea to uproot your teenage children half the way through their GCSE course !

I agree about escape to the country, if you're in your late 60's why would you want to take on an enormous house with a big garden ?

Wanted down under, is really sick IMO. Just splitting families apart.

My mum is always watching stuff like this and Homes Under The Hammer. They can be interesting but how many episodes of these shows can you watch? And why are all the potential buyers so fussy?

A Place In The Sun is the one that really annoys me sometimes. Some of them are so fussy and they complain about every house they see and I always suspect they didn't really want to buy a house in Spain/France/Italy/whatever other country they went to and instead just wanted a free holiday and 15 minutes of fame on the telly.

I saw Patti Smith in concert a couple of years ago and she was talking about watching ETTC when she was in the UK. She said she quite enjoyed it but bemoaned the fact they never bought any houses. She then finished off by saying f*ck them and f*ck their houses! Even punk goddesses can enjoy ETTC!

It's true about the house buying. They need to put a positive statement at the end. Sometimes they say they have put in an offer but in the majority of cases they don't mention what happened which leads me to think the majority of the houses are unsuitable or the people are time wasters.

I forgot about Homes Down Under. A completely pointless programme. I might apply to go on it to get a free long haul holiday which is what I suspect happens in the majority of applications! Nicky Chapman does it, doesn't she? She used to do ETTC too so maybe its the same production company? I am not a fan. A bit too vanilla. (A bit random, saw her in M & S in Marble Arch shoe bit a few years back. Taller than you'd think.)

    This^

I don't go out of my way to watch ETTC, but there's nothing else on on a Sunday morning as I eat my breakfast and it's ok. Some of the houses are lovely and there is a certain satisfaction to seeing people get excited over a view that isn't as nice as your own - it reminds me of how lucky I am to live where I live. I do agree with the comments about the padding though - they could cut the cheese shops and squeeze in another house.

I'd say that if you were to compare this show with, as a few examples, all soaps, all reality shows, endless cooking shows, sports of all kind on TV, so called new/alternative comedy, then Escape to the Country is moving quite high up my list of more watchable TV. I try wherever possible not to watch any of the examples I have given and when you do that then TV becomes a whole more enjoyable medium. :)

I like property shows - all that money, all that stupidity, and some nice places. Good for some salty superiority and a smidge of 'if I won the lottery', but not in a terrible way.

    The one show kills me.

I love it...I am a country girl living in the city - which I HATE - and so watching this makes me feel closer to the rural idyll that I love!! So sue me!!

I watch it to see if the presenter or buyers can get through an episode without uttering the phrase 'ticks all the boxes'. Hasn't happened yet.

Plus I'm mildly fascinated by presenter Alistair Appleton (v attractive with dimples) - he always strikes me as very proper on the surface but with a jaded edge to his presentation like he's bored and taking the piss a bit.

I find the daytime antique buy and sell shows the most boring tedious pile of muck on tv.

Go and buy a plate for 30 quid and sell it for a fiver profit/loss, great!

I would honestly rather watch a blank screen than have to endure that mundane pointlessness.

Actually Songs Of Praise tops the lot for obvious reasons.

Sometimes the stuff about the local area can be interesting. It is regrettable that the BBC show old and new programmes mixed up with usually only 2 shows per week being new. (Always check the date at the start if you wish to avoid the repeats)!
