could there be a surge in popularity for the civilian series if they did it right, or is it too late?

If the media give the show a renewed interest, now Dirty Des hasn't got all his mitts and exclusives tied in to his portfollio.

Then perhaps viewing figures will steadily increase, if Viacom cross channel promote it etc. If the production and casting of the show is better then that will no doubt play a role.

Bb needs to be a show that your normal viewer/working class can relate too.

Not a show full of wannabes and agency casts.
Who are a world apart from the normal working class.

Bb will never return to former glory, however it can still cause a rumble and shake if given the right treatment.

A core viewer base of 2million are still around, sometimes upto a million more for the celebrity version, so there is scope for more viewers to return, and maybe build on those figures.

Big Brother is dead. The show on C5 isn't Big Brother that achieved big viewing figures. It is a scripted reality show masquerading as its dead relative. Some folks are unable to give up on the dead relative believing that the life support wasn't switched off in 2010. Others convince themselves that there will be a resurrection and Big Brother will be back. In meantime a show aimed at scriped reality audience isn't going to pick up many new viewers.

The regular series needs a MASSIVE overhaul, trouble is these days they don't seem to put much effort into the regular series as they do with the celebrity series

It's just "Stick them in there and throw in an opening night twist which we have done before and/or get them at each others throats from the off"

Rinse and repeat every year these days it would seem

Ratings, maybe, but in terms of critical acceptance it just needs a decent bunch of characters. Sometimes they'll have chemistry and produce great TV, sometimes they won't (BB14 succeeded; BB15 failed).

I don't think any reality show ever gets consistently worse - The Apprentice has been the same-old same-old for years and the last two have been a lot better than the dreadful Series 8; I'm A Celeb was particularly bad this time round but has been decent in the past.

It would be more novel to see them making friends and getting along with each other.

I was watching a bit of BB1 the other day, and I was struck by how utterly fantastic the camera work was compared to the current effort.
Plenty of close ups and dramatic shots rather than a "point and go" approach.

Looking at last January's ratings for CBB, no. It was constantly 2nd in the slot just behind BBC1.

Regular series... maybe, and it wont have helped that Helen won. I think not a lot of people will return for BB in the summer.

It has been for yonks! Channel five should have left it in it's grave!

There were also much shorter and less frequent episodes (and lots of really awkward/bad production decisions - Sada's exit was odd)

The decline started in 2007, axed in 2010, and now after the revive it has reached its low point. I expect consistent but low ratings until the end of the show now.

The production team are the problem as long as Big Brother remains an overly edited, story driven, manipulated mess it will never be the same. Theoretically we could have a good run of Big Brother but the sanitized and teenage driven series Channel 5 produce alienates a lot of the viewing demographic.

I think the reality TV format is tired, period. It's too self-aware.

Channel 5 produce the idents before the programme, that's about it really.

Endemol responsible for the product, same as has always been the case.

BB has been on the decline ever since leaving Channel 4. After last years awful series and winner, the only way is down.

They have also influenced the choice of housemates for cross promotion purposes according to "somebody Desmond the porn man" , and I think whenever the contract is renewed the channel will place conditions, But yes, in general it is the same production team producing the same results.
( the Desmond link is somewhere on the live feed thread, not long after they took over)

Since before they left channel four in my opinion. The format is still doing well elsewhere though.
