Local TV (info from Disco)
D.S. thread Contributor, Disco, has been looking through various websites it seems that, unsurprisingly, the launch dates for the local tv channels are slipping.
Most of the 19 already confirmed are now set for 2014 launches. It seems that Estuary TV will be the first to launch (and that already broadcasts on Virgin under a different name – Seven). Only a few are so far indicating a definite Sky launch (whether they have agreed carriage is another matter!) though at least two more are indicating carriage on "other digital platforms" (i.e. other than Freeview).

The latest he has been able to find are:

The licences awarded so far with the latest and (in most cases) provisional launch dates are:

• 24 March 2014 - Mustard TV (Norwich)

The Ultra HD demo channels will be broadcast via SES’ prime European orbital position of 19.2 degrees East. For one of the Ultra HD channels, SES partners with Sky Deutschland and Harmonic to deliver an exciting array of Ultra HD content consisting of sports matches, blockbuster movies and documentaries to the first actual Ultra HD consumer set top boxes – from Humax and Technicolor – connected to a Sony 84-inch 4K TV screen. Ferdinand Kayser, SES’s CCO, told journalists that sales of Ultra-HD displays were currently modest, but would pick up over the next year or two. TV panel makers are betting on a high rate of growth for UltraHD (4K) LCD TVs during the next four years. These companies expect to ship nearly 943,000 UHD LCD panels this year, up from less than 33,000 units in 2012, according to the Display Materials & Systems Service at information and analytics provider IHS. The next two years will see shipments ramp up even more quickly to 7.1 million units in 2015, on their way to reaching 20.8 million units by 2017. The total rises much higher when including a type of lower-priced, lower-specification product called UHD Ready, panels, which mainly are targeted at the Chinese market. Suppliers collectively plan to ship as many as 4 million UHD Ready panels this year alone. More

MIPTV 2013 – Cannes. With Sony screens across the Palais and two conference sessions, there was no escaping 4K UltraHD. SES jumped at the opportunity to announce the launch of its SES Ultra HD Experience initiative, which invites content providers and broadcasters to work with SES to support the development of the Ultra HD value chain. “You’re not alone. We are here today to say to you: let’s work together,” said Norbert Hoelzle, SVP, commercial Europe, SES, during Wedensday’s 4K session. “Let’s be the catalyst for industry and get the Ultra HD train rolling. The same way we HD started ten years ago, in an industry-wide effort, let’s start Ultra HD today.” More * * *

The BBC has told London’s ‘Future TV’ summit that viewers are less and less enthusiastic about watching programming in 3D. The BBC’s technology guru Andy Quested, said the BBC had been an excited supporter of 3D broadcasting but that each time a new 3D show was televised, the audience ‘spike’ got lower. Quested’s comments come at the end of a two-year test of 3D at the BBC and include top-rated output such as the BBC’s flagship Strictly Come Dancing, natural history blockbuster Walking with Dinosaurs and comedy show Mr Stink, as well as last year’s London Olympic Games which transmitted dozens of events in 3D. The news is all the more disappointing given that the potential audience for 3D in the UK has expanded considerably, to around 1.5 million homes, over the past two years. More

Broadcasters have further work to complete on Ultra High Definition Television before it can enter the broadcast mainstream, according to the EBU’s head of media fundamentals & production. Speaking at the SMPTE Annual Technical Conference in Hollywood Hans Hoffmann said the interfaces needed for programme production and for connections in domestic equipment both needed attention. The new family of compression technologies, HEVC will be published shortly, but much testing remains to be done. More.

A real TV doesn’t need all this fancy nonsense.
A real piece of TV history, anyway, such as the Marconi Type 702 which was made in 1936,

I do not have a website for you to look at of my own, so I thought I would use this bit to thank everyone for their kind words given that I have taken over the thread. I will continue to update this but will probably need some help as we go along, and where necessary. The kind words are most appreciated. Thanks again.

Wow! Brilliant thread. Just wondering where you got the info about STV HD launching on 2nd April? That would be fantastic news, we've been waiting years for that to arrive on the EPG!

The Information TV website reports that "Irish TV" will launch a full channel on Sky 191 in May. Showcase 1 is currently on 191, and has a lot of Irish programmes already.

With Showcase 1 presumably moving to 193?

Is London Live still blocked for everybody? I'm keen to know if it will be FTA or FTV.

If its plain FTV surely anyone with a Sky viewing card could manually tune it?

This was one of the channels that was suppose to launch on Saorview the Irish DTTplatform but decided not too as 2nr the company that operates Saorview were looking for around 1 million euro for carraige on the platform with the fees being reduced as more channels launch on the same mux.

Now on full trade tests, not sure if it's FTA or FTV, I'm using a FSFS box/card.

Take the card out and then you will know, as, if its FTA, you will still see it!

FTV in all areas, not just London (only on EPG in London)

That's what I'm hoping, although the card will probably have to be registered to a London address.

For Sky subscribers this would mean a lot of messing about with billing issues. Could the solution may be to buy a FTV card registered in London and swap it over as required, or will this cause complications with box pairing?

I suspect that it will only actually be placed on the EPG in London from launch, or just before 31/3/14.

A bit before that I would have thought, as I said in the London Live thread, to allow people to see the promo, which is already running on Freeview.
    :)

Well, it would make sense for them to be able to advertise the forthcoming service, but AFAIK Sky normally only put new channels onto the EPG on the channels start date, or occasionally the day before.

The sale of UK terrestrial broadcaster Channel 5 has taken on a new twist
with the possible flotation of the Richard Desmond company.
    More here.

Community Channel HD is now on DTT COM7, a potential candidate for DSAT too I guess? Sky host the SD version for them so would potentially host any HD variant too.

Yes Sky could just knock off a few of its box office channels and host it there!

Why would Sky need to close some of it's Box Office channels for the launch of a new HD channel?

talking about box office channels...sky cleared 11739V, and moved some of its box office channels to 10862H (2E UK beam)
