I was over in America for a few months and I was watching television on a satellite TV provider called Directv in my cousins house (their equivalent of Sky),there were like 500 movie channels but when I went to the music section there was MTV which didn't play any popular chart videos, and a few others which only had reality shows..there was. no channels that played regular pop chart music like we have Chart Show TV,Starz,Capital etc. Are there none?

I have not been to the States for a while, but I do not remember seeing any specialised channels for music. I remember they used to have VH1 showing music, but that was before the station was brought out by MTV.

There are various spin offs of MTV and VH1 like here but they don't have huge numbers of subscribers like here.

We have a ton of them. You just have to have the right cable provider. DirectTv doesn't offer much, but Comcast and U-Verse do. There's channels with just pop videos, Latin ones, rnb ones, a mixture, etc

That brings me to another interesting point - does that mean that you get a better TV package if you go for cable with someone like Comcast than you do with satellite? Is it not like in the UK where you get more channels on satellite than cable? Which platform would be the dominant in the US (or at least in your state)?

But the US doesn't seem to have any music specific channels that play pop music videos..compare this to the UK where there are definitely 15 that play pop music videos specifically like Starz,Chart Show TV,Capital etc..?

You've completly ignored my post. Google MTV and VH1 and you'll find they have spinnoffs of the channels just like we do. Stuff like MTV Hits and VH1 Soul.

They are the only spinoff channels they have and MTV Hits is the only one in the whole US that plays regular pop music videos and most people don't even have that channel..I just find it kind of strange that they have only one channel while the UK has definitely 15 while the US is 5 times as big and has so many other channels..

    Does DirectTV not have Palladia?

But really.. why watch music videos on TV when there's youtube?

In the UK there is even a music channel section on Sky and other providers which have loads of music video channels..you might say people use YouTube today, but only this year a new music channel started in the UK called Now Music which plays non stop music videos so there is still a demand in the UK,but in the US which has 100s of channels you'd think there would be at least 10...even New Zealand has 4..I just find it strange

To answer the above question, I think you don't get more channels with satellite, but where I'm from most people use digital. I personally prefer Comcast because of On Demand. I can watch shows I like without having to record them and On Demand has a music section full of pop country rnb rock videos. But MTV has quite a few spinoff channels where they only play videos. There's FuseTV. TV One has block hours for nothing but videos. There's another channel, I think it is NOVA where it is all Latin music. And then in the 900 channels, there are radio stations and genre specific music channels. They arent videos, but if you want to randomly listen to 70s soul, they got you.

You're still not taking in responses for some strange reason. One thing to remember is that over here Satellite dominates over cable in the number of subscribers. In the US it's the opposite.

It's probably because they'd have to go up to four minutes without slipping an ad in :D

Its just strange that there is such a demand for them in the UK with up to 20 playing just popular music videos..then the US has just really 2 proper ones..

Sadly Viacom, the company that owns both MTV and VH1 here in America, they don't seem to care about the music scene, they are more into the way overdone Reality TV market,so Americans have resorted to going to YouTube or Vevo for our music video needs, yes P Diddy has a music video channel called Revolt, but they are more urban than anything..

is there really a demand? Their viewing figures are abysmal... most register 0.0 in the audience share ratings . And this was no doubt the reason they disappeared in America.

The ones in the UK are unwatchable due to the frequency and length of advert breaks.

But why are there still so much of them in the UK..you'd think they'd be getting rid of them and not making more, even a new one NOW Music just came this year..

Viacom basically just separated the two. There are videos on MTV in the morning, but the majority of them are played on MTV Jams which was made as the MTV channel solely for videos. Then there is also MTV Hits. VH1 has VH1 Classic and VH1 soul. Both are for music videos. There's also CMT Pure Country which used to be VH1 Country. Palladia is a mixture of music videos and music events from Jools Holland, concerts, music awards, Storytellers, Soundstage, etc.
We also have spin-offs of BET like BET Hip-Hop and BET Gospel where the focus is music videos. And all of these are just the ones Viacom owns. We aren't lacking in music video channels in the US. You just have to have cable to get them.

You've done a good job explaining it twice now. I am certain that the OP will be back again for a third time and ignoring your answers like mine. Interesting to note, that in the US cable dominates over Satellite. In the UK it's the other way around.

I thinkit is because here, satellite has a reputation of not being as reliable as cable and there are a lot more cable options here.
