Don't know how much interest there is in these on here. The Team GB squad has been confirmed today.

http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/get-inspired/28151117

British Gold medalists from the last games in 2010 include Jade Jones who of course went on to win gold in London & Sam Oldham who was part of the bronze medal winning Gymnastics team.

Not sure of any TV coverage but IIRC last time there was some coverage on the Red button so hopefully that will be the case this time around.

Strange that we are not taking any athletes or cyclists, but presumably they have plenty other high-profile events to do.

The event also features various candidate sports.

"Great Britain's Jen Wood will compete in sport climbing, whilst skateboarding, roller-skating, wushu will also feature. "

Not sure about cycling but I know British Athletics prioritised the World Juniors - that's fair enough but I still think they should have supported it. The 2nd/3rd string 17 year old athlete may actually be the better athlete as a senior whereas the top junior star plateaus as a senior. Andy Turner was tweeting the other day saying how he never did much at English Schools but has gone on to have a good senior career.

It is only the second Youth Games, but it is a shame Athletics in Europe seems cold to the event.

Was thinking with the Glasgow Commonwealths would it be a good event for a Glasgow or Manchester (Glasgow lost in 2018 to Beunos Airies).

I was thinking how in 2002 Manchester Commonwealths, 2012 London Oylmpics/Paralympics, 2022 Youth Games, If HM Queen is around we will no doubt have 70th Coronation events. Like 2002 and 2012 should be separate from Jubilee, but just like Britain put on a Paralympics to be remembered, would it good to celebrate youth, the future whilst maybe recalling 70 years of HM The Queen?

Also seems 2022 will be first Youth Paralympics.

Should it be a Glasgow/Manchester bid? or a London bid, bring the youth to London 10 years on?

Actually, I was thinking the other night that one of the reasons why the IOC is so keen to introduce events like the Youth Olympics is precisely because the other 2/3 of the world do not participate in the Commonwealth games, so don't get the chance to introduce their young sports people to a multi-event environment. Same with the Universiade.

BBC Red Button will have daily 1 hour highlight reels of this starting this Sunday, there doesn't seem to be anything scheduled on Eurosport

There are a lot of region and continental multi events. Asian, African, Mediterranean, Pan American, South American games etc. We just never hear about them

The swimming comp looks fairly weak overall with most of the world's best junior level swimmers not participating. Two noticeable exceptions are Ruta Meilutyte, the Brit based Lithuanian gold medalist from London and the young sprint swimmer Matheus Santana of Brasil. I think Ruta is going mainly at the urging of her federation.

Youth Olympics doesn't really seem a right fit for Ruta. She may be eligible for it in terms of age but it's really designed to give athletes experience of a multi sport environment rather than for those who are already champions. Surely the European Champs should be her priority this year.

According to her coach, Jon Rudd, she is going mainly at the request of the Lithuanian Olympic fed (there may be some funding incentives involved). After she is done in China she is going to hop on a plane to Berlin to swim (but she'll only make it back in time for the 50 breast, a non Olympic event).

The BBC Red Button coverage from Nanjing has been a bit rubbish, but Britain have been winning medals.

Ben Dijkstra, gold in the men's triathlon, following a photo finish.
Jessica Fullalove, silver in women's 100m backstroke
GB women 4x100 medley relay also silver
    Abigail Stones, taekwando bronze.

Britain's rise as a Gymnastics superpower continues -- Giarnni Regini-Moran has won All Around Gold. He has also qualified for 5 of the 6 Apparatus finals. Ellie Downie has also qualified for the All Around final and 3 Apparatus finals

The BBC daily highlights loop is a bit useless, seems to be running about 36 hours behind. We had another gold yesterday from the men's 4x100 relay swimmers. Christian McNeish took bronze in the under 63kg Taekwando.

Ellie Downie took bronze in the women's all-around today, so the dynasty rolls on.

Martha Bissah of Ghana has won herself an early 17th birthday present - her country's first Olympic gold medal in the Women's 800m A final. That's made my day! :D

Still more success for British gymnasts.

Gianni Regini-Moran won another Gold, in the Vault, and 2 bronzes, in the high bar and parallel bars, taking his tournament total to 5 medals, 3 Gold and 2 bronze.

Ellie Downie also won 2 bronzes, on the beam and the floor, taking her total to 4 medals.

Francesca Summers continued Britain's record of success in the women's Modern Pentathlon with a silver.

Overall we have now won 21 medals, a big increase on our total of 9 from Singapore 4 years ago.

Closing day in Nanjing. Giarnni Regini-Moran has deservedly been selected as GB flag-bearer for the closing ceremony.
