Can you get hold of HD DVD recorders yet?
Currys are only stocking an HD DVD player at the moment.

Global launches for HD-DVD and BluRay recorders are at least one year off, maybe two.
There are DVD players which have built in scaling/de-interlacing hardware and many only allow this function to work when connected via the HDMI output.
The result is not HD but can in some circumstances produce a better picture than relying on the HD display to do the scaling itself.
I'm going to guess the Samsung HD-850. Although it doesn't play HD DVD discs, (there aren't any to buy!) it does upscale SD DVDs to 720p or 1080i HD.

HD-DVD is the term used for the upcoming blue laser product due early 2006.
You'll see HD DVD and variations used for other products and the likely hood is that the porn you have seen uses MS wmv (VC1) encoded material carried on standard DVD media.
Thank god the porn industry is there to drive standards ever upwards!

Terminator 2 and The Fifth Element are available on this format, however you need a Internet connection to aquire the license to play the media, and if you import one of these disks it wont work outside the US.

It will upscale SD DVDs and output a HD resolution signal. Your TV would do the upscaling too - which bit of electronics does the upscaling better I don't know.
XBox 360 will stream HD content form a PC, will play HD games, but will not play disk-based high definition content.
For the avoidance of doubt HD-DVD is a brand new disk format which can store 3 times (?) as much data as a DVD using blue laser technology; it is NOT the same as high definition content on a data DVD. You can't yet buy an HD-DVD player, nor can you buy an HD-DVD disk.

Impressive machines especially the price tag.
However they were only intended for the Japanese market used in conjuntion with their BS satellite broadcasts although it could record from normal sources.
This recorder will not have a direct relationship with mainstream domestic blu-ray recorders which are going to be rolled out in the next year or so which will far smaller/cheaper and loaded with digital security.
Well they are first generation for sure, but it's certainly not true that recorders aren't available. Others include the Pannsonic DMR-E700BD, Philips IPS01, Samsunge BD-HR1000, Sharp BD-HD100, LG BH-6900 - you get the idea.
I have a Samsung Plasma TV that is high definition ready.
I was bought Robbie Williams' Knebworth DVD for Christmas which was filmed in high definition.
So I though now would be a good time to replace my Tesco DVD player with one that would play high definition DVDs.
I asked originally if I could get a DVD recorder that would play high definition DVDs but was told no, so bought a Samsung High definition player from Currys for about £109 (but turns out not to be a high definition player???!)
Hope this helps. No idea what blue ray , etc mean!

* notes - I don't really need a DVD recorder as I have SKY+ but it seemed a useful addition to the lounge!

There is no such thing as a High Definition DVD that will play on a standard DVD player.
There are DVD data roms that contain HD files for playing on PC's and a few network media type players.
I can see the confusion if you do not exactly what the terms for both the content and the hardware relate to eachother:)
The Samsung DVD player has some hardware which can take a DVD and increase the resolution of the movie on that DVD upto what we consider High Def. It is only HD because of the changed resolution which a totally different matter compared to having a source that was HD in the first place.
Blu-ray and HD-DVD are two blue laser optical disc systems designed to replace the DVD standard and have enough capacity to carry HD content at the native resolution.
The first generation (2003) being so far removed the 2006/7 mainstream product that they could be regarded as a different family of products altogether:)
Don't think I said that there were no Blu-ray recorders, I've always understood that Blu-ray would be recordable from day1 and for a 2006 launch then the prototypes would have been displayed at trade shows for quite a while which a quick google confirms.
I like the look of the Philips model, matches the flat panel range of displays very nicely.
Ages, thankfully Blu-ray recorders will be available at launch negating all those "I'll wait until it's recordable" excuses. Hopefully it'll stop people wasting money on DVD-recorders since they took so long to come out and are only now becoming available at accessable prices.
The japaneese ones are first gen are virtually a different format.
