A Slimline Xbox One in the pipeline. It may see the light of day in 2015?
Chip designer AMD has developed a smaller, more cost-effective 20nm version of the main processor found in Xbox One, opening the door to a cheaper 'slim' version of the Microsoft console. The news comes from the LinkedIn bio of AMD's senior manager of SOC (system on chip) physical design, as discovered by Mosen from the Beyond3D forums. The entry in question says he "successfully planned and executed the first APU for Microsoft's Xbox One Game Console in 28nm technology and a cost-reduced derivative in 20nm technology."

Since they're both the same design nearly, wouldn't this also mean a smaller PS4 chip is coming too? After all AMD handle both of them so if they've managed to shrink Xbox One's CPU side of things, ...kinda goes hand in hand.

Where has MS confirmed a slimline X1 is in the pipeline?

Everything Goes you don't happen to work for DS by any chance as this is the sort of traffic grabbing headline they like to use based on little to no proof. :p

Is it such major news, I would have thought it inevitable that there would be an X1 & PS4 slim version at some stage.

And then a super slim version after that.

It's happened the past 3 generations of consoles, it will happen again.

It's just one processor. Doesn't mean the whole console will be shrunk down any time soon.

Odds are it will happen eventually but to claim that one's in the works already is pure guesswork and speculation.

The title for this thread is actually worse than the DS article :p

The super slim is very ugly.

The launch phat PS3 with the chrome bits was the best.

The Xbox One having an external power brick and bulkier design than the PS4 with its smaller design and
having the heatsink right next to its internal power supply unit ... which of the two new-gen consoles do
you think is the one more likely to have potential system failures in future due to overheating?

I'll stick with the phat version. I dig the 90's video recorder look.

But is it going to bring it up to par with the PS4?

As many of the men in here will know, size isn't everything, it's what it can do that counts :)

Expect ps4 slim in may 2016 based on the ps3 release timeline
    http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_models#Model_comparison

The fist slim was release aug/sep 2009

I personally have the last slim they made before the super slim, this uses similar / same power as the super slim - probably the best ps3 they released (came out summer 2011 I think) it was a quite hardware upgrade I think

I personally will buy the ps4 next year or when the slim comes out

I've got the first PS3 slim from 2009. Bought it when they just came out. It came with a 120gb hard drive which I've since upgraded to 1tb and it's still going strong.

Got an Xbox 360 'slim' too, 250gb hard drive.

I'd contemplate on buying a PHAT XB1 when the slim comes out. I cannot justify buying a slim just because of it being smaller.

It does the same job as it's bigger brother. Sooooooo the point in buying a 'Slim' would be what?

Wrong use as well. Phat = good. Fat = big.

    Much like the super-slim PS3

I wasn't keen on the X1 at first but now I'm quite fond of Big Ern
