New mobile broadband sim card in old modem?

Ive just got a new modem ZTE MF627 but the drivers for it won't install so im wondering if it is possible to use the sim card from my new contract in my old modem (Huawei E220)
I tried it already but it won't connect. It gets to the part where it says 'Open port' but then it says 'a connection cannot be established'.
