Santa....

1) Maybe he's an alien who thinks he's Santa

2) Maybe he's one of those robots who dressed like Santa and appeared in two of the previous Christmas

3) Maybe he's a fake Santa created by the aliens who featured in the trailer and looked to me like naked Ice Warriors

The Eleventh Doctor was friends with him so they already know each other. Whether Moffat chooses to accept his own canon we shall see :D

Yes it was obvious the only reason the master was brought back as a woman was so that The Rani could be brought back as The Santa.... :-o.

It is a kids show after all so I doubt they will question his existence.

    Some minor spoilers here: http://www.doctorwhotv.co.uk/2014-christmas-special-plot-hints-68617.htm

    My speculation:
If it's about dreaming and about what's real and what's not, my guess is that the Christmas special will be about the Doctor and Clara realising that they didn't depart on the best of notes. The episode will probably serve as Jenna Coleman's last episode and give her a proper farewell without both parties lying to each other. It will probably be left ambiguous as to whether Santa is real or some kind of hallucination.

Digging this, he knew that the Doctor and Clara were lying to each other, he clearly has a magical IPad like Missy too :)

Santa Claus or Father Christmas?? They are, or were, very different beings(?)/creations(?)/concepts(?)/characters (probably go for that one!)

It has been a kids show since 1963 and none of that is really adult

Well, at least Santa wasn't female.

Though I'm surprised that some of the posters on here aren't up in arms about that. Did they audition men and women for the part and then choose the best actor, as we are always told should be the case? If not, why not?

Most likely a gimmicky character played entirely for laughs.

Well there is this poem about Santa which covers this
Dear Mr. Slater, Dear Girls, Dear Boys,
Once a storywriter caught me bringing you toys.
The year he spied me opening my sack,
My skin was white, my boots were black.
You probably know how that story goes . . .

I laid a finger aside my nose?
    All these years, needlessly,
That story worries children who don’t have a chimney.

All year long I listen to the news,
Read people’s thoughts, see people’s views.
At the end of the year, when I see what’s needed most,
I take that shape, like a Christmas ghost.

I can pass through keyholes, windows and locks,
Apartment buildings, hospitals, tents, and trailer lots.

One year I used a wheelchair in place of my sleigh,
Once I was blind and had to feel my way.

It’s hard to understand when I don’t leave a toy:
You can’t unwrap a gift like hope or health or joy.

    My skin has been black, white, yellow, red, brown;
My eyes have been slanted, crossed, and round.
Sometimes I have been a she:
All these things are a part of me.

You may not believe all this is true,
But that’s okay, boys and girls, because . . .
    I believe in you.

They should have got Tom Baker to play Father Christmas, his voice would be great and he's certainly got the belly!

No it hasn't. It has been a family entertainment show since 1963 (because family entertainment gets a bigger budget than children's TV)
