Broadband disconnects frequently

Talktalk HG533 router wired connection disconnects frequently. Would a better ADSL cable improve this problem ?

    Unlikely, but since they are cheap it is definitely worth a try anyway before investigating other possibilities.

    Which bit disconects the wired connection to the router. Or the actual broadband on the telephone line?

    A, will be either a cable problem, Network card in pc or the router itself.

    B, you will need to put the router in the BT test socket with everything else in the house disconnected. Remove the bottom half of the test socket put the broadband filter directly in. Make sure you are plugging the router ASDL cable directly into the filter. You can plug a telephone into the telecom side. If you have a cordless you should be fine.

    You will need to leave this in place for a few days to see if it makes a difference. If it does not you will need to report a fault. However by doing this you will have ruled out any of your internal wiring as being the cause.

    There are a few things to clarify first.

    Are you sure it is the ADSL that is disconnecting? When it disconnects what is the state of the indicator lights on the front of the router?

    Do you have any extension phone sockets and if so are any of them in use? If you do have extensions and some/all are in use do they all have ADSL filters fitted?

    Do you have an NTE5 type master socket? If so remove the lower section to reveal the test socket as shown in this image

    Plug the router in the test socket and see if there are any disconnects. This isolates the extension wiring and connects directly to the incoming phone line. So any issues you have there are either the router or the line.

    If you get perfect operation on the test socket then that would suggest the problem is the extension wiring or something plugged into an extension. In that case it can be a bit of a faff tracking down the cause.

    First check is to follow the cabling and check for damage. Then unplug everything (including any phone plugged into the same filter as the router) and test with just the router on the line. Then plug things back in one at a time. Test for a period before plugging the next device in until you get problems which would suggest the last device plugged in is causing the problem. So unplug that device and test again to confirm. Also try swapping filters as a dodgy one of those could cause problems.

    If you are still getting disconnects on the test socket and it is the ADSL connection going down then try a different lead and indeed a different filter if possible just to be certain. If that has no effect then it is either the line or the router. In which case it is TalkTalk's problem to fix.

    But it is essential you check using the test socket. If you call TalkTalk to fix the fault and it is found to be your extension wiring/phones etc causing the fault you could be looking at the wrong end of a 130 quid call out charge!
