Actually the update stream does contain new versions, this was the case when Darwin was being tested - the new version gets added only for a very short time (hrs not days) to allow people in the know to update the boxes - it's just not public knowledge and you'd have to be very lucky to catch the update that way.
Maybe! Howver NONE of the current tests are NOT being done in that way! It would be pointless as testers would have no means of reporting faults back to Sky (which they DO now have!!!!)
They also apply certain updates to specified serial numbers / viewing cards.
ALL the current testing is being done using lists of specific smartcard numbers!
