European Football Channel TBA

Are there any rights due to end for BT's European games? Obviously Sky have La Liga, but this suggests they will look for other leagues

EDIT:

Erdivisie, La Liga, and Champions League are the games its looking to promote (looks like a new deal for dutch football with sky then)

Champions League final season this year on Sky however

I would imagine nothing is concrete yet considering it's still got 'xxxxx' in place of phone numbers and links. That looks like a draft which has been leaked too early.

potentially nothing certain, but there were five posters, and an advert I watched

Advert was David Beckham, showing various ''joke'' ideas sky has come up with, such as a sofa cam, and a red card button.. (all for comedy value) then they decide on a European Football Channel

The video was on a survey so I don't have a link

They've been testing a red buttom prompt to "Activate Sky Sports 5" on Sky News on the EPG and a Sky Sports test channel off the EPG over the past week, and the Sky Sports website had a link to watch Sky Sports 5 that didn't work yet. All info over in the weekly news thread in the Sky section. Seems pretty far on with all that.

MMM. They can barely fill Sky Sports 1-4 at times.

Is there a possibility that you are going to need Sky Broadband to get SS5?

ie Sky Sports customers (even those on the Sky Platform) would also need Sky Broadband?

It does look as if it isn't an "ordinary TV channel" in the sense that it needs to be "activated"?

I hope that Sky won't put this in with their Broadband package - very exciting news for European football fans - would live to see them add some extra leagues as well:

    Russia
    Portugal
    Belgium
    Greece

All possible candidates I suppose, although Portugal would clash with Spanish games and the league is broadly a pretty low standard (duller than the French less competitive than the Spanish)

Belgian and Dutch games tend to kick off around the same time too, so unless Sky would put the games on tape-delayed basis and that has never been their style, then I guess it's a case of wait and see what Sky's vision is for it.

Read the advert; basically the same strategy of free broadband with Sports. Possibly SS5 will be exclusive to viewers on the Sky platform.

The channel would solve the problem of La Liga having the first half of games on the red button (terrible PQ) although other coverage would still suffer this fate (extra HD streams needed for weekends).

But why would the channel need to be activated?

(If it is an ordinary TV channel available to all SS customers - even if it was just those on the Sky Platform).

I was thinking before that maybe it was going to be a portal channel (Like what Sky Germany have), so the activation could be leading to it in a red button style, but with HD access possible for the main game, if not more. I don't know if Sky have the rights to show all La Liga games, but seeing as Champions League and the UEFA qualifiers will all be utilising match choice, that's what got me thinking that way.

It's possible for broadband too, maybe, but when someone pressed red during the tests last week, only mention in the description was that it would come as part of "your Sky Sports Package" and no mention of a broadband requirement in the details.

Sky need to get Serie A & Bundesliga possibly Ligue 1.

Not sure how difficult that will be but they do have Sky Italia and Sky Deutchesland with rights in those countries so have a starting point for negotiation.

They have to keep La Liga.

I think it's highly possible the Dutch and Portuguese leagues too.

Get more premier league games in next contract.

Try to get exclusive premier league rights and
    put worst package on FTA.

To calm those who speak of them having a monopoly.

Could they launch a FTA HD sports channel on Freeview HD buying up all rights as they come up.
No more whinging about sports moving TV schedules around. BBC & ITV may cry a little but would be beneficial in long run. They can't be bothered to launch a full time sports channel!!!

A non sports persons dream scenario!

Just when Virgin finally get all the Sky Sports channels in HD, now this comes along. Great.

BT Sport extended their Bundesliga rights earlier this year, to 2017. ....

I'm already a Sky Fibre customer but currently don't have sports as I cancelled them a few weeks ago so I hope this will apply for customers like me also and not new customers only

Maybe it's that it's similar to BT's activation requirement? In that rather than for broadband customers with BT, if you're a Sky Sports customer, you sign a new contract by activating Sky Sports 5.

As has been said above, this will be for the exclusive Uk rights Sky hold for ALL Euro 2016 qualifiers (All as in not just the home nations but every single qualifier in Europe). If you think about how the qualifiers have been set out e.g. "the week of football" that basically goes from Thurs-Tues this will be Sky's way of showing games simultaneously.

Sky Italia may face stiff competition for the Serie A rights from Eurosport who could be tempted by UK rights too. "According to local media, Eurosport has submitted a bid for package D, which includes 132 matches involving 12 Serie A teams with a starting price of EUR 705m for the three seasons." http://www.broadbandtvnews.com/2014/06/06/discovery-s-eurosport-after-italian-football-rights/

Not quite exclusive. ITV have England games and 20 other qualifiers live. ITV have first pick of non home nations games in Matchdays 1-8 with Sky having first pick in 9 and 10 (ITV have second pick) with the rest all live on Sky.

Regards Serie A (and Ligue 1) there is an answer here on community.bt.com that BT have the rights "up to and including season 2017/18"

I think BT will try hard to hang on to most of the football and soprting rights it already has.
BT may even try and bid for an extra premier league package next time round.
Aksdo this time next year Champions league moves to BT. Then we will see if BT will still offer there sports channel free to there broadband customers.
A FTA Sports channel from Sky on Freeview would be good but I can't see that happening as BT will also be bidding for sport as and when it becomes available.

Wouldn't surprise me if Sky launched it; weeks after offering Virgin Sky Sports 1-4 in HD. They've done similar things before (giving basic Sky channels in HD and then launching Sky Atlantic). The amount of sport on Sky will be going down in future as BT hoovers up the Champions League; I could quite see BT Sport 1-8 launching next year for that.

I would like to see BT bring out a red button service rather than having some extra sport on there BT sport website or there sports app.
Will be interesting in the next year as sporting rights come up to see who gets what.
BT have the money to bid for sport and I think they will do better than the others that have tried to take Sky on and failed.
Its also good to see that Eurosport is still around showing some sport.

Don't think its a question of may......im sure they will and not just for an extra package.
