Ive seen quite a few on other threads saying Argos will be next.

I can't see that myself, most of the things we buy for the home come from there. Ive just bought a new laptop from there as well, I tend to keep to the shops that I know will give me a good deal and service. Argos do that, im sure I could buy online cheaper at times, however I only trust Amazon to give me a good deal (say the goods were faulty) and whilst the others im skeptcal about.

Argos are a bit daft to have so many stores. Theres at least 5 in Norwich and 2 of them are in the City centre. I don't think you need that many TBH some savings could be made there deffiantly.

I don't see it either - I think it's business model was already better-suited to the rise of internet shopping than most, so unless it's been woefully mismanaged I don't see why it should be next in line to fall?

    This is the reason:

If all thats true then its more likely that they will offload Homebase and just run Argos.

I'm not sure why, both businesses are absolutely crashing.

Argos is a little like Blockbuster: it was absolutely perfectly positioned to dominate online at the start of the last decade, but just fannied about.

And that's why the are refocusing the business to have more emphasis on the internet sales.

Yes, 10 years too late. Just like Blockbuster. And HMV. And Jessops.

They've only themselves to blame then - the rise of internet shopping should have been a dream come true for them, given the distribution infrastructure they already had in place

It's not going under any time soon. Half year profit of £122m.

Awww and they've just changed their little stock checky machines in our local argos to proper touch screens.

    :(

Mind you I think if they put their little stubby pencils on chains so they cannot be nicked would have saved them in the long run.

Order Number 217 to Collection point (B)ust please,

I think a lot of Argos' problems are related to an oversaturation of stores - in my area, we have three branches within about three miles of each other, and they really only need one in this day and age.

I know they're reducing the number of stores at the moment and if they get that under control I think they're better placed than most to adapt to internet shopping.

It's the "Companies gone Bust" porn that just seems to be making this board excited.

They are simply getting off on it to pass the time. Makes gloomy January better if everything seems worst than they are.

Since then they have reported a rise in sales and profits that article was written back in May, they are shutting some stores though but some towns have more than one anyway.

That's very true, there are stores absolutely everywhere. Surely closing a few won't do much harm?

Used Argo online just before Christmas to have a wardrobe delivered, as nobody could beat their prices on the one I wanted - turned up on time, and can't knock the service at all.

If they want to survive they need to focus on the online delivery aspect, which it seems they're doing, so they should be ok!

The Homebase where I live closed last year. Argos probably has lower overhead costs as the stores are basically showrooms for the most part.

But I can see them going to a more online click and pick-up type service. Argos do have the ability to let you search stores for stock as well, so if it's out of stock at one location unlike say HMV you can find out where the nearest stock is, reserve it and go pick it up.

But these businesses only survive so long as their suppliers have faith in them, something HMV didn't have.

Same here. I bought a wardrobe just before Chrimbo and the service was excellent.

BUT - that was the first thing i had bought from Argos for about 15 years !

I hate those germ ridden touch screens which don't work properly.

From your article "the miserable £75m-ish expected this year."

Argos needs their revamp have an impact before that number hits negative, which at the current rate, will be soon.

Home Retail Group interim report is due tomorrow but share price is rising.

The quoted report was in May before a re-organisation of the company. Homebase in particular has had big investment put in it

Can't see it myself, I use Argos fairly often and so do most people I know. Their prices are keen and the whole 'click & collect' thing works really well.

They've got a good smartphone app, and website. Both can check stock at all stores nearby. They seem to be doing all the right things but yes, agreed, they probably do have too many stores.

I wouldn't be surprised if they closed my nearest Homebase, it has some of the inept staff I have ever come across. On my last two occasions there, I had to inform the staff member on an item in store I wasn't accustomed to when they were trying to tell me bull just to buy it.

I hope so, they have clearance and online deals - unlike some of the stores that have closed - and their stores always seem to be busy.

I have asked for gift vouchers for there for the last couple of christmas's,and i've liked having them in the house in case i needed something from there during the year for the house. if i had of had money,i would of just used it to buy bread and milk ect.

so please argos-just last another 12 hrs :D
