Goodwood - sometime in the early 1830s the course was the first to implement flag starts. Before this innovation the starter apparently just shouted Go! at the field.

This means of getting the horses away was gradually phased in throughout the 1830s reaching Epsom in 1837 when Phosphorus became the first horse to win The Derby from a flag start.

In 1903 a scientist at a veterinary college in Riga, Latvia, found that the saliva of doped racehorses was fatal to frogs.

The effect of this discovery on the Latvian frog population is unclear.

Quarantine. There are no quarantine requirements for racehorses coming into the UK from within the EU. From outside the EU they are only permitted from countries where the risk of disease is perceived as negligible or equivalent to the UK.

    Yes indeed. :)

Beauchamp Xerxes is owned by financier Erik Penser who lives about 8 miles west of Wantage in Compton Beauchamp. I think Adielsson, a fellow Swede, trains all his horses.

All Penser's thoroughbreds are prefixed Beauchamp (for home-breds) or Compton (for purchases). His best horse was undoubtedly 1999 Eclipse winner Compton Admiral.
