How would life be today had the internet not been invented?

Would we all chat by SMS rather than Facebook?

Would more phone boxes be around with SMS booths?

Would newspaper and book sales higher?

Would computers just be used for Word and excel and gaming?

Would sky have 10,000 channels to cater for all genres if there was no Youtube?

Also what next for the web? We have gone beyond it being just internet explorer to wi-fi, gaming console connections and on demand tv. Will kitchens and lights all be next to be operated via the Internet?

I suppose it's possible. They'd be more likely to have normal remote control devices I would have thought, but perhaps mobile phones or hand-held tablets will end up with some application that makes them into such devices, & let you control cookers & electric bulbs at a distance & without having to walk to them.

The same things we did before the internet was invented. Buy books, go to the library, use phone boxes, directory enquiries and post offices to look up phone numbers. Phone people to contact them. Make arrangements to meet up with friends by talking to them when you see them. Go to shops to buy things. Go to bus and railway stations to find timetables. Write letters and post them. Go to the bank on the High street to pay in money and draw money out. Pay people by cheque or postal order.

Blimey, reading this back makes you realise how much stuff we do on the internet.

There would likely be some other similar protocol for devices to communicate, an alternative version of the internet.

I think that happens already - smart buildings or something. Plus I'm pretty certain there's an energy company that has a system that will let you control the heating and whatnot in your house remotely, which must be internet-based.

TV would be far more popular than it is now. Local night life would a focal point for people during the evenings, Catalogues and mail order would still be the best method in buying goods and services,

More door to door sales, more telemarking. News would travel slower and newspapers and radio would be very popular.

I think everybody would use a mobile phone a lot more and also carry a Filofax.

It's known as "the internet of things" consisting of fridges, lights, cookers, smart meters, etc. It's a computer security nightmare.

There's a bit of a running joke in 'Archer' where it's revealed he has bought a Minitel terminal not realising it doesn't connect to the WWW and it only works in France anyway. ⎚

I suspect we'd have something reasonably similar to the internet if perhaps not as good.

People would have to travel miles and miles to maybe get that item from years ago that's no longer sold in shops.

We'd have to wait about a week for a reply from someone when writing letters.

We'd always have to leave the house when wanting to buy anything

We'd have to buy a games console if we wanted to play games

You'd have to wait until the repeat of the episode you wanted to see was shown

You'd have to rely on the library to get the information you wanted

I can see more and more things being controlled over the internet. TV content will probably be delivered through fibre optic cables under the ground, which would mean that there'd be no more having to move the snow off the dish so that you can get the signal back. That's the biggest weakness with aerials and TV satellite dishes.

I sometimes wish I had been an adult in the pre Internet world. I was only a child and teen before the net took off so feel like I missed out on a proper existence without having to rely on the Internet for so much.

Oh well at least I had a net free childhood playing on my bike and such.

I was the last year at school to leave before the internet was brought in so I feel sometimes I missed out but I still think the years as a child not having the internet and mobiles were a blessing.

We all had issues at school but at least no one had mobiles or i pads and we used to just hang out and play football no one ringing or texting someone all the time.

    Without the advent of MP3
We would still be using cd for music, maybe s.a.c.d and Sony mini disc for portable music.

No internet for video, so no YouTube, Netflix, bbc iplayer. We would b stuck with regular broadcast channels & dvd/Blu-ray Discs.

Quite often for Christmas, I will drive a 100mile round journey just to reach a town which has several quality shops that sell the kind of stuff some of my family like. Points to note, the customer service there and attitude is far better than the area where I live. They don't have an "online presence", you must physically drive to the town. Their local council has their head screwed on right, as their overspill car park (and they do need an overspill due to the numbers of people using the town) only cost like a £1 for for 4 hours. They actually want to attract people to the town, whereas where I live (and sorounding) they do everything they can to deter people, and then wonder why foot fall is down.
Part of the enjoyment is getting there and back....once I clear our local pot hole ridden roads and get onto much smoother roads serviced by other councils its a very nice experience, I guess it's lucky that the route is not thru a city centre. I am also lucky it only cost me £12-£15 in fuel (depending on traffic, and how quickly I want to get there).
