Depends on the mode you play, but essentially its all about building. You can place blocks down where you like anywhere in the world. You can build anything, and theres been some incredible structures built by players.
Then theres survival mode, which takes the building aspect of above, but places you into a hostile environment where you need to build a shelter to keep you safe from the monsters that roam at night.
You cut down trees and smash rocks to make tools, dig for coal to make torches, mine the earth to find iron and diamond to make yourself weapons and armour, hunt animals for food and leather, plant crops to make wheat, make maps from paper, explore abandoned mineshafts with poisonous spiders, theres so much you can do. The wiki has lots of info on it. http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Minecraft_Wiki
I've not played this game too much as I'm not much into PC gaming but I'm really looking forward to picking up the XBLA version developed by 4J studios as it's also said to be cross compatible with the PC game!
thongofbelo summed it up quite well, but yea generally its kind of like a sandbox game where you can build anything you like, so creative mode is like lego in some ways, you are only restricted by your imagination.
since the last update mojang are bringing in more rpg elements (levelling up, potions) so it looks like survival is going to be a mix or craft/construction/survival & rpg. at the moment...
my son wants to buy minecraft, he's 9, has aspergers, and has played WoW,.... should i buy it for him
its a game that can be enjoyed by younger players so I think it should be fine to play,my concern would be that it is scary at times though. I often jump at monsters in the game when playing survival. maybe best to buy it for yourself and then you could judge whether it would be ok for your son to play.
1.0 has just been released the game is technically finished now, I imagine the servers have crashed again when everyone tries to update at the same time!
some nice stuff in this weeks new snapshot, most exciting thing is the addition of a new ore! but also i'm really liking that they have random temples generated. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vLmgY3DILCo
would be good to see a new official update on the way.
That blew my mind. The architecture is just incredible. Yoggscast have already had a 'survival games' (think hunger games) event and filmed from all the players perspectives:
^yea its amazing what some people can do. talking of limits, someone has been working on a mod to increase the height of maps so that it stretches way up to the similar limits of the horizons.he's been talking with jeb (one of mojangs development team) about trying to get the same type of thing incorporated into the vanilla version. now that would be amazing! think what people could build then! a satellite on the edges of space? if you had the hard drive space.
I'm a minecrafter! I'm playing with the Technic Pack and the Yogbox at the moment. Lots of fun. The snapshots look amazing. And finally a use for villagers! \o/
Late to the party, I know, but I am a Minecrafter. I was given it as a gift way back in Nov 2010.
Love it on a big PC monitor, but not so sure about the Android version for my Sony tablet. I've only tried the demo version but given that I always alter the FOV to 90 on the PC it looks too zoomed in on the tablet for me to play effectively.
Anyone know if it's able to be changed in the paid Android version?
Don't want to seem like a party pooper or owt, but I just can't work out what could possibly be so enjoyable about a game
with such horribly outdated visuals - especially on comparatively modern gaming technology like the XBox 360, the PS3,
or any decent PC built for gaming. As I said in another thread, it looks like something from the mid-late 1980's that you
might play on something like an original Nintendo Entertainment System, or a few years later on a Super NES.
Everytime I see a videoclip or a random screengrab of a Minecraft character, I'm reminded of a certain Dire Straits video!

I agree. However the game will play on an abacus so it crosses all systems. It's like Tetris for the 21st century. I find it boring as hell but could easily play hours on it.

on the pc the with a powerful enough computer you can update the graphics with mods and texture sets.
The three dimensional worlds that are randomly built in Minecraft are colossal. So much so that the game can't all be kept in memory at once. Hence even a kick-ass PC struggles with this and why the blocky nature of the game.
Fifteen minutes in and you won't even notice the graphics. When you're down in a cavern and near the bedrock floor and you discover an immense underground waterfall dropping from the darkness above, you'll still marvel at the scenery despite the blocks, which you've long since stopped noticing as the game play is so compelling.
Powerful enough PC? it's a game that draws blocks. A Commodore 64 could do Minecraft It suucccckksss
you've obviously not played it. if primitive graphics is what puts you off I feel sorry for you missing out on a great game and no a c64 couldn't do what minecraft does lol.

I have played it on PC and Xbox. I love RPGs and Sandbox games. I HATE this fad of linear, 8 hour games that are constantly released. I like to keep games and keep going back to them. I think Minecraft is a good game for kids learning. But I played it for a few hours and thought it was boring. OK at first I was intrigued with the creafting and digging big caves but it is dull. I class myself as a nerd but Minecraft is a PROPER nerds game.
Probably a stupid question, but the latest Minecraft has "adventure" support, right? How do you make adventures? How do you play adventures others have made?
Re: the graphics, above: I get that some people will never understand why people play a game with such lo-fi grafix, nor should they have to. There's a huge array of games out there. I HATE platform games, but others love them. I've been playing video games since the B&W Binatone Pong days. I like a well-presented game but 3D games are barely catching up with 2D gems like Baldurs Gate for lush visuals so I'm kinda ambivalent about how games look usually.

I like that I now get exp simply for mining and smelting. I'll soon be able to enchant wizzo weapons and tools.

yes I meant 1.3.1 can't correct the edit as digital spy won't allow it.

For those wondering what the fuss is about, it's definitely worth a try
