Hello,
Just wondering if people knew how I would burn a movie on my PC onto a DVD? Can I burn it onto a CD-R 700 mb single use? Or do I need something different?

look at the manual for your player for a start to see what formats it can handle.
a good site for guides to help you is here
Use the free DeVeDe: it makes VCD and DVD images (.isos) which you can burn to disc with any burner you fancy.
Does your PC have a DVD writer or just a CD writer?.
Many DVD players can play DIVX AVI files quite happily, but you would need to check your DVD players manual to see what formats it supports if any. If it can play DIVX files then you may well get away with just burning it straight on to a blank disc (either a CD if it is less than 700Mb or a DVD if more) and the DVD player should play it.
If however the DVD player has no file format playback, and can just play normal DVDs then you will need to convert it and burn to a blank DVD (but you'll need a DVD writer in your PC). You can also get programs that will make what's called a VCD, a sort of forerunner to DVD but of much lower quality. You should get around 80 odd minutes of rather poor quality video on a 700Mb blank CD and, of course, you don't need a DVD writer just a CD writer.
For creating DVDs the best software to use is ConvertXtoDVD but it isn't free unfortunately. However it handles pretty much every format you can throw at it and creates decent menus, has subtitle support, multiple soundtracks if your movie has them etc. etc, It also burns direct to disc in the correct format so what you get is basically like a commercial DVD just on a DVD-R or +R disc. Almost all DVD players can play them, although very old DVD players may be fussy about whether it will play a -R or a +R disc. The quality is also excellent if you have a good source to convert from.
There are some free alternatives to ConvertxtoDVD too:
FreeDVDcreator has some good features and can handle most formats, it also creates menus and can burn direct to DVD discs too.

DVDFlick is also quite easy to use, but is a little long in the tooth these days, but it still works well.

WinXDVD Author is another basic free program to create and burn DVDs:

All of the above programs not only create the DVD structure for you they are also able to burn direct to disc so you don't need a separate DVD burning program.
If you have Windows 7 Home Premium, W7 Professional, Ultimate or Enterprise then you may already have all you need on your system. Windows DVD Maker which can make basic DVDs playable on DVD players too.
I am a total technophobe and have no idea how these things work.
use convertxtodvd. It's extremely simple to convert and burn a film onto dvd.
I always buy these these
Never let me down and you can burn 2-3 films on high quality with them
How about these would these do the job too?
They'd do it but I always use RW discs in case of mistakes. These can be reused instead of ending up as beermats.
DL disks will hold a lot of material but can't be reused if you change your mind or make a mistake.

Hope people can help me. I now have some blank DVD-RW 4x 4.7GB disks!!
I have downloaded firefox addons which seems great as theres a little symbol that pops up whenever there is a video so you can down load it. Then down load it and then I downloaded something called RZ Burner but in the part that asks for DVD source I can not find the downloads I have made?
Anyone help me please?
DVD Flick is a simple all in one piece of freeware that will do the whole job for you.
Bear in mind that the total playing time for a standard DVD disk is a maximum of two hours, unless you get into shrinking or dual layer.

It is really easy when you get the hang of it!
Keep trying if you get it wrong because you've been clever enough to buy RW's.
Any problems feel free to PM
Good luck
AFAIK, there is no maximum playing time defined in the DVD standard.
(I hope this isn't a thread hijack - happy to be told off if it is )
Not sure if it can as It's been a long time since I used it. However, Windows DVD Maker (built into Windows 7) can do so and burn them to disc too.

Normal "SD" quality allows about 140 mins on a DVD, or 20 mins on a CD.
A file burned this way onto a DVD should play on most standard DVD players (and computers). I'm not sure about the CD "version" on DVD player .......
To burn the file, just use the normal burning software on your PC - whatever that is - and import the entire "video_ts" file with its sub-folders.
Looks the way to go - thanks for the tip.
Just to add that Flick contains its own burner, Imageburn, and you can set it to burn the job, or stop it after the .vob conversion and use your own burner.
Used to use DVD Flick but I find DeVeDe much better (and quicker) these days.
