2 Cats bullying the other, causing bathroom problems

Had 2 female cats originally since November last year, last month we adopted another kitten, a male which was found in a ditch.
Anyway the females didn't take to him, unsurprisingly, which is probably our fault for not introducing them the correct way.
Anyway they have settled down somewhat, not as much hissing etc.
However, the biggest problem being that whenever the male uses the toilet, the females are sat outside (litter tray with lid) waiting and they chase him off when he comes out, so he has started doing his business on the sofa. Anyway getting round this problem we are physically putting the male in the litter tray and waiting, but we can't be doing this forever so does anyone have any advice?

How many litter trays do you have? Are all your cats neutered? Are they outdoor or indoor cats?

TWS makes a good point - I thought you should have one more tray than cats so that'd be four in OPs home. It could simply be the older cats see the tray as their territory marker and resent the new comer marking territory there - that he has no choice won't have occured to a cat.

With that many cats, you need quite a few litter trays or even the garden. It is cruel for them to share and very confusing for them.

We have 2 litter trays, one at the foot of the stairs and one in the spare bedroom, he was using the one in the spare bedroom but has stopped using it for some reason. Think it may be because he is afraid to go upstairs, the other 2 sit at the top of the stairs when he is downstairs.

Both females are neutered, the male isn't as of yet. All indoor cats, the male wants to go outside but we are not letting him until he has been neutered, the females aren't bothered about going outside.
