I am considering buying an iPad and, there are so many older and newer models out there it is a minefield. It's not a mini I want, so can someone please tell me which iPad is the latest model, what version of iOS does it have, etc.? The model with retina display - which I don't really need, as I'm not a gamer - is iOS6.
Thanks.
Thanks.

iPad Mini
iPad 2
iPad (with retina display)

all three support iOS7
you would be foolish to buy an iPad2 considering the reasonably small price jump to the retina version.
there is no "iPad 4".
there is a 4th generation iPad, but it's not actually called the iPad 4 - it's called "iPad with retina display"
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IPad#Model_comparison
So far there have been four generations of 10" models (each with different amounts of storage, with or without 3G, and black or white case) plus the 7" model.
but the "third generation" iPad is no longer for sale by Apple.
and that wasn't called "iPad 3" either.
eBay certainly goes with the iPad 3 and iPad4 shortcuts!
They should know!
by using the terms apple use to name them.
ie "third generation" or "forth generation".
sticking to the official naming policies i can't see how there could be any confusion.
as i said, if you stick to the official naming policy then no confusion can be had.
and technology sites are known for being 100% accurate aren't they!
and your linked article used the official names, not the made up ones.
iPad 4 is the one with retina display, and is referred to as such, so thanks for confirming that 4 is the most recent. Do you know when the 5 will be released, and what the improvements will be? Thanks.
the 4th generation ipad is the current model (has never officially been called iPad 4 though).
apple name it as "iPad with retina display" on their website.
any reports about a 5th generation iPad will be pure speculation at the moment.
you need to tell us if you plan to buy brand new or second hand. if brand new then you only have 3 models to choose from - as listed on the apple website.
But the "new iPad" was the 3rd generation model (now discontinued)!
Until the 4th generation iPad, each model was released in March/April (April 2010, March 2011, March 2012).
The 4th generation iPad was announced in October 2012 and released at the start of November 2012. The assumption has been that Apple changed the "usual" schedule from Spring to "Fall" for two reasons: to get the iPad updated with the new "Lightning" connector (introduced in September 2012's iPhone 5) [and update other things] earlier than waiting for Spring 2013, and to shift the "usual" schedule into a more lucrative time of year: The holiday season.
As there has been no new model of iPad yet this year, and as there has always been a new model every year, the various news sites and rumourmongers are speculating that a 5th generation iPad will be released before the end of this year, perhaps repeating last year's October announcement / November release.
There have been enough "leaks" and "sources" to make it fairly certain that there will be an update soon, and that it is likely to involve the "usual spec bump" (e.g. a shift to the new A7 processor as used in the iPhone 5S) combined with a new design that has a smaller bezel (border around the screen) as introduced with the iPad Mini. There is also speculation of a new screen technology being used ("IGZO"), which would enable the screen to be thinner and lighter and not need such a hefty battery.

I would definitely recommend against buying a new iPad now, given the likelihood of a new version in the next couple of months.
Keep an eye on the Apple news sites such as these...

you certainly don't ask for a Fiesta 4, that's for sure.
well they are two entirely different products.
1 is a tablet and the other is a small laptop.
the ipad starts up on 0 seconds, assuming you don't actually power it off every time you finish using it.
you need to decide what you are doing to be using the device for, only then can anyone tell you if a tablet or a laptop is more suitable.
