Joining Social Groups (Stoke-on-Trent)

Hi everyone.

I've recently graduated University and started full time employment near the Stoke on Trent area and at the moment it's feeling quite lonely. I've already made a post about it and had some feedback/advice.

I've been here for about seven months now. I have a housemate which is nice, I have joined the gym and go regularly but it's not proving a place so far where people are very chatty and you can meet new people as everybody is there to focus on their work out. I asked help from somebody the once and have just nodded and said hi ever since, but nothing other than that.

I was wondering if anyone had any ideas of what sorts of clubs I could join? I've tried having a look round but the only ones I can find seem to be Conservative clubs or sports, and I'm not so big on either.

I'd be interested in doing activities that surround reading or technology, or things like Hiking, Snooker, Arts & Crafts etc. and Tennis. I have enquired about Tennis and they're getting new people in this month so I will probably be part of that. I'm 22 this month and I'm looking to meet people either that are like-minded or

I was going to go back to my commercial street dance class which I did at University but I'm so nervous about going back. I have social anxiety which doesn't help and it's holding me back from re-joining.

I haven't found anything good so far. It's a lot easier in big cities like Birmingham and Manchester but in a smaller place where I live it's a little more difficult. All I know is I'm sick of dwelling on it and need to be proactive now.

Thanks in advance.

as a stokie all of my life the only advice i can give you is just run away and don't look back, this place isn't known as "sh*te-on-trent" for nothing so get on the train and go! go! GOOOO!

Unfortunately that is not an option right now, as my rented place and full time job is here.

Try expanding the surrounding area into your search, like Newcastle (under lyme) and Hanley. I don't know if there's much but it can't hurt to try.

Evening classes in local colleges? If there's a morrison's near you sometimes there's clubs' leaflets up on the announcement board.

Not been to Stoke, but my gf is in Newcastle and I quite like it.

I like hiking if you fancy heading out one weekend. I'm not a group but am interested in finding new hiking friends. Also want to try to get into wall climbing too.

I live in Newcastle and have to echo what someone said above - it's not a brilliant area to move to ;)

At least it's not Birmingham. ;)

If you like football there's lots of non league clubs around down there who I'm sure would love some help on matchdays.

good god man you do want to scare him away ;)

but the best thing possibly you can do if you like the outdoors is join the scouts as a helper/leader as you could be out there every other weekend doing all sorts of stuff assuming the HSE aint banned everything and theres still a good few groups around the last time i checked

I actually live in Newcastle Under Lyme, I didn't think anyone would have heard of that. I'll try Morrisons - thanks!

There are always fitness classes and/or clubs etc on at Keele University.
One thing that is lacking (for me at least), is some sort of book club or young WI (closest one is in Stafford).
I live in Silverdale by the way :)

That's something I've been looking for - a book club, as nerdy as that sounds.

I'm not big into sports (only like Tennis, Snooker, Hiking etc) but that seems to be the easiest thing to access.

I graduated from Keele last year so I know there may be a few things going on there - haven't looked into it this year though yet.

I'm at Keele at the moment (been here 6 years now!).
I've been thinking of setting up some sort of book club for a while now.

Hi. If you're interested in dance classes there are lots of them in stoke to choose from, do a google search and you'll find them - Angela beardmore school of dance could be a good place to start if you drive (it's around 15mins outside Newcastle).
There's a large number of cycling groups if that's something you'd fancy. You could also join staffordshire wildlife if you like hiking, or volunteer for local outdoor working parties - coombes valley in leek have one (that's an rspb reserve) or, again, get on google.
If you've ever fancied amateur dramatics there are again lots of groups in stoke for this - porthill players if you fancy musicals or newcastle players if you like plays / comedies etc.
Stoke really isn't as bad as it's made out to be! Get out there and enjoy! :)
