Samsung S4 (mini) - Music player voice control question

I was keen to use the voice control function of the music player on this phone but unless I'm mistaken, it's a bit pointless?
It seems that the phone screen has a maximum timeout of 5 minutes in the settings. As soon as the screen goes off, the phone stops responding to voice commands. I have even changed in the settings so that when the screen times out, it doesn't lock, but this seems to make no difference.
I wanted to have this as a bed side music player to doze off to, or for use in the living room and be able to skip tracks by barking "next" at it if need be. This works fine if the phone screen is on, but what's the point in that? I could just press the next button if I'm looking at it anyway.
Can anyone advise me if I'm missing something here? I can't believe they would put such a feature on this phone but for it have no practical use. I would be very grateful to anyone who can help, as it would be good to get this working.

Pretty sure it's not that. I think it's separate to s-voice. I tried doing that though just in case but it didn't work.
The voice control for music player seems to operate independently of s-voice.
