Winona Ryder Joins Star Trek Cast...

Winona Ryder has signed up to join the cast of the upcoming Star Trek movie as the young Vulcan mother of Spock.
As reported here:
http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/a79534/winona-ryder-joins-star-trek-cast.html

Now, is the article wrong in saying this character is Vulcan (remember, Spock is half human on his mother's side) or is this a change or maybe it's not Amanda (Spock's mother) at all but another Vulcan who is acting as a mother figure for him?

Spock is only half Vulcan, and should stay that way. To change that would be to completely change the character, as he is split between the Vulcan logic, and the human emotion...

It could be another Vulcan...T'Pau maybe...

Well, I did think of T'Pau but I can't really see Ryder in that role...

I know, T'Pau is supposed to be much older...but it must be someone either special, or with a big part to be played by Wionna Ryder

    The article also says
which will be set during the Starship Enterprise's crew's early years at the Starfleet Academy

I thought it had been said that it would not be at the Academy?

I see Pike has been cast as well.

I think its a mistake in the article. Trekmovie is saying she's playing Amanda Grayson, probably in a flashback to Spock as a boy.

Amanda isn't a very Vulcan name is it!

Whatever her character is she'll probably end up stealing every scene she appears in :D

That would sound like they haven't messed around with the character after all, which is a relief.

I started to have concerns when I read the BBC's article.

Perhaps they want some properly hammy acting in the film as a sort of homage to some of the bit players from the original series. Ms Ryder is particularly beautiful, but sadly lacking in acting ability.

That would be because Amanda isn't a Vulcan character...

I know that, the DS and BBC articles are suggesting that Ryder will play "Spock's Vulcan Mother"

Which is quite clearly a mistake in the articles. TrekMovie, which is a more reliable source is reporting that she's playing Amanda.

I was just pointing out that if she's playing Amanda, she won't be a Vulcan and that they haven't changed Spock's back story.

It would not be the only thing wrong in the article!

Spock's mother would be Amanda who was from earth and it is from here that Spock gets his human half. It also says "Starship Enterprise's crew's early years at the Starfleet Academy" - the academy story has been denied a number of times (see http://trekmovie.com/trek-xi-movie-info/) also http://trekmovie.com/2007/11/08/winona-ryder-is-amanda-grayson/#more-1247 where Amanda is correctly described as human.

But isn't the whole point that the new movie is a re-launch of the franchise, not a prequel to existing Star Trek chronology? In that case they can make Spock's mother a vulcan rather than human.

I know Leonard Nimoy is in the film and that connects it to the current continuity, but I think the film is a re-boot in the same sense Casino Royale was (a new continuity, but retaining an actor from the previous one, Judi Dench and other familiar elements such as theme music)

After seen I Robot If Bruce Greenwood is the actor that plays Robinson then I can just about see him as Pike. Is there no word yet on what role Greg Grunberg is playing yet . After all JJ Abrams does cast him in everything that he does even if it is a very small part(my bet is on a red shirt that gets killed in the first landing party scene).

I don't think so. It wouldn't work with all the trek fans still around. It would just be stupid to throw away a whole background of characters, and to do what? It won't appeal to a different audience anyway.
There have been all sort of fan-fiction developing Amanda's character, and she now has a background as strong as the original characters.
Throwing it all away would be really stupid, imho.

Well I'm afraid most of the reports of the film, including on the official Star Trek site refer to the movie asa reboot rather than a prequel, but you could be right.

If it is a prequel I wonder if there will be Klingons, and if there are I wonder what they will look like? The problem with making it a prequel and subsequent movies would mean the Klingons would really need to look and behave like those in the OS, as Enterprise explained how they ended up losing their brow ridges until the Motion Picture.

And what will the styling of the uniforms and ship be like? Futuristic like Enterprise or more 60s like the OS?

The word Vulcan was dropped from the BBC article after a couple of hours and it just says she plays his mother.

I doubt we will see Klingons in this film, if there are more films to come then hopefully the Klingons will be the more human looking version. While Enterprise did not have them looking exactly like those in TOS they looked similar enough.

    As to the uniforms.

The above pic (is it Jennifer Morrison?) suggests that female crew members (if that's what she is) will be wearing skirts rather than trousers so we're looking more TOS then Enterprise I would think.

You, and many reports you reference are wrong. For the film the only reliable source is TrekMovie. From their FAQ
Will it fit with Star Trek History (canon)?
    Yes.
The writer/producers (Abrams, Orci and Kurtzman) as well as star Leonard Nimoy have repeatedly said they will respect Trek history and canon.

More 60's I hope....never liked the boiler suits which Enterprise had....

It's been reported in the usual places that she is not playing a Starfleet character, but possibly playing
    Carol Marcus
    .

A big aspect of the Spock character was his duality and the inner torment caused by the contrasting nature of his mixed vulcan-human heritage. To change who his parents are is to change the very nature of the character.

Looks like we may get an even younger Kirk (flashback to childhood?) as well, unless the makeup team are going to work miracles...

Given how bad Enterprise was at being a prequel I don't feel this film is going to fill in any gaps well either.

Perhaps somethings should be left alone!

Well, this could be a great chance to explore Kirks character - why he was the way he was in TOS and the movies (seemingly unable to settledown, chasing women, running away into space).

I think that given he right storyline, pace and direction this could be the biggest movie in the franchise and could go a long way to restoring some fans faith in the production team.

However, as I have said before Enterprise wasn't that bad, especially in the later episodes (excluding the last one!). Given another season and I think a lot of people would have given it another chance.
