It would be nice to say "no", as retail staff also deserve some time off, as they are also "people" but I know some of the bigger stores are open.

I'd work New Years Day for the overtime if my work was open!

When I worked New Years Day (no choice, so I could never make plans for that day), any overtime was wiped out by the cost of taxis, as no buses were running from where I live.

The big supermarkets would also need people to do night shift tonight if they're to open tomorrow, and good luck getting volunteers for that.

Really depends on which shop. Some will be open but with shorter opening hours.

I'm in the same boat as you. I am working tonight and tomorrow night and i will only get double time from midnight!
It's very depressing because i work in security where i am in an office building all on my own.:( I probably wouldn't have gone out but i would have gone round a friends house and had a few drinks.
I really hope your job is more exciting than mine.

I know someone who works for my local Tesco and thought they were joking when they said they were working on New Year's day. The opening times are ridiculous:

New Years Eve open until 1900
    New Years Day 0900 1800
    Sunday 2nd 1000 1600
    Monday 3rd open 0800 onwards
    Tuesday 4th 24 hours

They don't even get the break on Monday in lieu of NYD.:(

My local Sainsbury's is closed tomorrow and so is everything I think apart from Spar but they have the most expensive prices it's unreal (apart from a big tub of muller light - vanilla/strawberry for a £1 :) )
