And then put it back on the shelf. Ive seen lots of people do this normally older people. I think its the hight of rudness to maul bread about and then not buy it.

I saw one old lady do this last week with the loafs I buy I had to go right to the back before I found one that was not mishaped.

Giving it a light squeeze tells you how fresh it is.

This old dear was squeezing it like an Acordian.

If the supermarkets put out fresh bread everyday there'd be no need to feel a loaf. Instead they''re trying to flog days old bread while the fresh stuff sits in the back getting stale. It's a vicous circle of stale bread.

lol My mom does this all the time.

Apparently if the bread is hard, it's stale.

Reach into the back of the shelf and you will get a fresher loaf :D

Do the same for milk as well.

I usually go by the dates now! When I was a kid I would have got a terrible time from my Mother if I went home with a loaf that wasn't fresh. That and an 'end loaf' which I never did get the hang of spotting.

I've had loaves out of the supermarket that were well in date but that turned out to be covered in blue mould.

Do you notice that they still stay soft even though there's mould? God knows what they put in it these days. :D

Plenty of people do this to test for freshness.

With mould inhibitors, flour treatments and other nasties, people tend to forget that proper bread is a living being and needs to be poked about to check to see if it is cooked properly or is fresh.

sliced bread is full of chemicals to preserve it, try drying it for breadcrumbs, immpossible.
Most slice bread is also frozen before its put on the shelves,
They have the right idea abroad, bread is baked daily sometimes twice a day and its eaten the same day or thrown away.

I just pick a few loaves up, then move onto the next thing I need. When I get home I stick them in the fridge and they last me 2 weeks, until I have to get more on the next food shop.
