I believe I'm the victim of harassment / Payday loans

All during last summer I used Wonga a few times. Yes I know its not the best way to go about things but with rent money, and a trust deed sucking up the majority of my wages, aswell as food, I'd have had a miserable life if I hadn't used them. There was no issues I was always able to pay them back and I haven't had one since January.

A few days ago I was short of cash again. Having made no late or missed any payments, and with only 5 months of my trust deed left, I thought i'd get some money for a night out. Sadly Wonga rejected me. I have no idea why! I've always paid everything back on time and have a good trust rating with them. As I said, trust deed is over in a few months so won't need them anymore.

I tried a different company by typing into Google something along the lines of "bad credit payday loan" and filled out my information. Instead of rejecting or accepting me it took me to a different company website where I was asked to fill out the same info again. I decided not to do this and closed the window.

Since doing this in the space of 3 days I've had over 100 text messages from various companies trying to offer me loans and payday loans. I've had calls from a number and they keep hanging up when I answer. I looked up the number and found this

http://www.tellows.co.uk/num/01413600184 (states harassment)

Some of the texts have been from companies like DO NOT GIVE ANY INFO TO THEM THEY ARE POSSIBLE SCAMS

quote4cash.co.uk
paydayelephant.co.uk
v12cash.co.uk
cashcow25.co.uk
paydaymole.co.uk
advancemetoday.co.uk

+ many more all saying the same that i've been approved for a loan and i can spread my payments etc call / visit site now.

Has anyone else encountered this? How did you deal with it? I think we should make a pinned list of scam and reputable companies. Places to go when in need of cash.

I think you should just change your number, and make your bank aware of the situation just in case.

Also, you could discuss your finances with the bank while you are there to see if they will offer you an overdraft or alternative to payday loan.

I don't think you've been scammed in that sense because you've not been deprived of anything (I assume). The company you gave your details to initially sounds like a data mining company for advertising purposes - so you were never likely to get a loan from them, but what you've done is essentially submit your details to all of these other companies as someone who is interested in a loan.

I'd set up a spare email account and email the main company (debt masters direct apparently, according to your link) to ask for your number to be removed and see what happens.

It does read as thought you googled something and then put your details onto a website that you didn't check properly. Why didn't you try other well known lenders if you're desperate?

I'm not sure there's anything that can be done to stop the numbers texting you though. I have a spam number that I used for anything online and I would be very rich if I took out half the payday loans that I'm offered by text on that number

In respect to the text messages, not a lot you can do now your number is out there other than get your number changed, but if you have an android phone I'd recommend the postman app this will treat all texts from unknown numbers as spam, and silently shove them in a spam folder

Of course if you're expecting genuine texts from unknown numbers you do need to check your spam folder occasionally, but you won't be disturbed 30 times a day

For future reference donottrack me offers site specific email addresses, basically whenever your signing up for a site it will generate an email address unique for that site, then forward the mail to you. Get any problems and you can just kill off the unique email. I'd never give my phone number to a website

Yep this is where I stopped reading. Gobsmacked! OP you're not a victim - you've given your information to be used by companies in respect to your enquiry. Always check when you're entering info into websites and look for those tick boxes.

They're basically compare the market for bad credit loans. You put your details in and they pass them on to loan companies and those who are willing to loan will then contact you.

Isnt this just a lack of common sense which has resulted in you giving your information out to multiple companies and not reading the small print which probably stated they might share your information with carefully selected partners?!

I'm in the same position and have had almost £80 taken from my bank account as I was stupid enough to put in my bank details (I hold my hands up, stupid mistake not even going to moan about it and try to blame the company). Although the website was very misleading and did not mention the broker fee to begin with but I should have known better to research the website. I'm getting constant text messages, deleted about 80 last weekend and since then I've had probably about another 50 plus various phone calls through out the day. I think I'm going to have to change my number. I've had to open up a PO account so that my money isn't going into my bank account as any money going in was coming straight back out. I've learnt my lesson the hard way unfortunately and will always read the small print and research companies before I even think of using them.

Payday loan to eat is one thing but you said its for a night out?' If you wait until you save up then you wouldn't be paying excessive interest terms to these company's.

Er, except that's not why you were borrowing money.

You said in the OP it was 'for a night out', not to have a 'decent diet'.

If you're not eating a decent diet, and have to borrow money for that why on earth would you be spunking money on a night out if you can barely afford to eat healthily?

    Mental.

'Nights out' are for people earning lots of spare money.

If you want to get drunk get yourself a 50cl bottle of cheap vodka for £6 from ASDA.

    Indeed.

If you give all of your information to a whole bunch of unverified, dodgy loan shark companies that you literally 'found on Google', for the purposes of borrowing money.. for a night out, because WONGA actually rejected you a loan... quite frankly you need to go back to school.

This basically sums up why you are in this mess.

You seem not to understand that a night out is not an emergency.

Sadly you are a perfect reflection of society, prepared to go to a loan shark to borrow money for an evening drinking no doubt.

A payday loan should be a last resort, Not for a night out

If i can't afford a night out i stay in. I couldn't be in debt for the sake of a night out

I missed the line 'trust deed' in the ops post.

This is an arrangement with debtor to avoid bankruptcy- it seems the op is still paying back money after having problems to pay the debt.

It would make borrowing from a loan shark even more ridiculous - for a night out!

is this a wind up folks!

surely noone would borrow money from a loan shark for a night out.

dread to think what the other reasons were for the op borrowing money in the past.

But Wonga could lend you the money to go on a ghost hunt to find a Unicorn that poos rainbows. Get real and learn to read the forms you are filling and the implications. There are people out there who really do have problems. (says someone who left her ex with nothing, enough for a train ticket and didn't go out for years - it's called priorities and perspective).

TBH the only reason I would consider using a payday loan company is if I owed money to the Mafia!. I would have to be totally desperate. I really abhor these companies who seem to have popped up in abundance in recent times with their 'it's all so easy and normal' advertising. Wolves in Sheep's clothing springs to mind.

Actually it's quite common , I remember reading about 50% are used for frivolous means such as nights out new phones ect.

As said if I can't afford a night out I stay in.

You need to be very careful with applications; some of those rip-off merchants charge an automatic "fee" just for you filling in forms. I know this due to my girlfriend previously working in the fraud section of Lloyds and has told me before loads of people had rung querying £X taken from their account without their knowledge, but apparently it is in the small print of some of these charlatans, usually £50-100 >:(
