The likes of Mika, Robbie Williams etc surely have no place on what is supposed to be an adult radio station providing a public service. This type of dross is adequately covered by commercial radio.

I don't listen to Radio 2 very much as I consider that it has too much talk and too little attention to the quality of the music.
I was at a relative's house yesterday and heard the station for about 10 minutes. The two records played during that time were Homeward Bound by Simon and Garfunkel and Your Song by Elton John. Although good in their day, both songs have been flogged to death and half way back again in the years since they were released.
Can't Radio 2 stop treating its listeners like morons and inject a little originality into the selection of music ?

There is zero chance of going back to that kind of music or introducing specialist shows in daytime

48 hours ago, I'd have agreed with you.

But, if one accepts that the Times leak is authentic (I have little doubt, given the detail), and that it will be accepted by the Trust (who might save 6Music, but won't stop the Exec moving further into "public service" territory), then I'm not so sure.

The report talks about 50 per cent speech/documentary - and playing non-mainstream genres - *in daytime*.

I have no doubt the R2 management will do that as subtly as they can.. but I think if that bit of the report is accurate, changes to R2 may end up being the bigger bit of radio history (rather than 6Music) coming from all this.

R2 already does play lots of different genres in daytime from soul, thru rock, folk & dance....even skiffle sometimes. Some of that may be increased at the expense of the "hits", but they have to be very careful.

So has Commercial Radio won the day?
Some stations have moaned so much about Radio 1 and 2 'stealing' their audience.
Now I can only talk about the area I live in, but Commercial Radio has not got a product that I am liable to drift to.
On my analogue radio on FM I have three Hearts and Classic FM. Global like to see Heart as a natural option away from Radio 2, sadly Heart does not see rock as music that 25-45 year olds like. Funny I know plenty of women in that age group that do like some rock.
Think that I may have to get a DAB Radio if Radio 2 is rebranded, as I do like variety, and BFBS offers more of that than the commercials. I can listen to Absolute on Cable, but it does get to bloke sometimes (and I am a Male).
So answering my earlier question. No I don't think commercial radio (at least here) will get a sudden drift of disillusioned Radio 2 lsiteners. But it could be a good day for CD's. MP3's and BFBS.

    Totally

Commercial has done a very good proganda job on R2

They fail to see the blandness in their own offerings & blame audience fall on R2.

In reality IF R2 is wrecked by this, ipods, cds & Internet stations will be the winners, not "todays bland semi national variety mix" pretending it's your local station

I think Gold stations would probably win in audience figures as well.

    Probably not.

I still think AM music radio COULD be succesful if done correctly, but you need presenters who know the music & a very wide playlist

Gold has a few good presenters, but it's playlist is woefully repetative.

People won't put upn with AM for that & for those with DAB it's still too narrow musically, even though it's better quality

    Maybe Smooth or Heart?

    Maybe Smooth or Heart?

    I doubt it.

People chooseradio stations for a reason & BBC listeners tend not like commercial very much....mainly the adverts

Even those who try commercial will be severely dissapointed by the small playlists.

Ipods, Cd's & Internet stations would likely be where disfranchised R2 listeners would head

I don't like commercial Radio. I was a regular listener to Virgin before I started listening to R2, but there were too many adverts & they kept repeating the same songs.
