I've caught myself laughing at my own jokes before and then I get all embarassed. Luckily (or not) though it seems I'm at my funniest when I'm not meaning to be but I will laugh once I notice everyone else laughing.
People who laugh at their own jokes are bloody annoying, but they're nowhere near as bad as idiots who 'like' their own facebook status. Such people really should slash their wrists and trip into a puddle of Hepatitis C.
It's not just when people laugh at their own jokes/stories that p*ss me off; it's those who in addition to laughing, stare at you laughing expecting you to respond in kind. I used to sit next to someone like that at work, almost every comment ended with a laugh and a seemingly never ending expectant stare. It was so draining, eventually I had to request a change of desk.
You can only do it if what you said is really really funny, or really really unfunny. If in doubt don't do it, because it really gets on other people's tits.
Do you agree or do you think I'm being an asshole?

I agree that it does seem very curious behaviour.
Add some pitiful laughs from the readers.
I laugh sometimes at my jokes, it's not old material , mostly fresh off the top of my head so my reaction is genuine.
What are you meant to do stand there like Steven Wright and deadpan at each joke and comment
My vote goes to the donkey's chocolate starfish.
A consummate professional.
