I'm absolutely certain that if I gave you a laptop without a HDD in it, you'd be unable to get any of my personal information from it.

    Of course not!

I'm equally sure that you won't be able to gain access to the HDDs I currently have on the shelf beside me to get data off those either.

    Nope, true that!

Beyond that, I'm not sure how stuff about clouds and the internet applies to the subject of whether or not data can be extracted from a HDD.
I mean, if you're suggesting that everybody's "stuff" is out there, in clouds and on the internet, what's it actually matter whether or not the data on your HDD can be retrieved or not?

    You should!

You seem to be fixating on what's theoretically possible in a worst-case scenario rather than what's actually likely to happen in the real world.

    Nope!

I've actually bought two used laptops in the last 2 weeks.
Guess how many of them I scanned the hard-drives of to try and recover the personal information of the previous owners?
    Correct. Neither.

    You answered your own question?

    No, I didn't.

I stated that I don't understand why you chose to raise those things related to extracting information from a HDD.

Perhaps you'd care to explain how they're related?

    HDD LOL :D

    Just saying etc..........Go somewhere serious.

    Then, f**k with me. :)

    For FUN

BIB - No........Whatever you do, it'll ALWAYS be there.
    :)

You did notice the phrase 'to all intents & purposes" and "serious recovery s/w" in my post...? Sure yh the Russian Military could recover it, maybe even the Met Police Child Porn Squad could have a go at it if they really thought it was worth the effort. To the rest of us, it's as good as gone.

To be fair, you can get software that does a pretty good job of recovering data from a formatted HDD fairly easily.
A while back, I managed to salvage almost everything from an HDD which'd automatically been formatted after it was plugged into a smart-TV.

Main thing is, IMO at least, what are the chances that your old laptop is going to fall into the hands of a gang of IT-savvy criminals who're intent on going to the effort of extracting the data in the hope of getting something they can make use of and them being able to figure out who that data belonged to so they can make use of it?

I mean, if you're Simon Cowell, Elton John or Kate Middleton, it's probably a good idea to smash up your old HDDs with a hammer, just to make sure that nobody gets hold of anything private (or, at least, get your butler to do it) but, for the rest of us, what're the chances?

If you say so. That's the thing though, I wasn't taking the piss and for you to say I was, is a bit disingenuous.

You can delete the data with a hammer if you need some stress relief though it needs to be a decent hammer and it's best not done if you are upstairs from anyone. If you can remove at least part of the cover first this also helps.

Alternatively if you know someone with the right kind of screwdriver set, dismantle it and take out the platter and hang that up for a nice shiny twirly decoration that's a lot posher than those old CDs - it should give a nice clean ring when you tap it so if you have a few you can make a wind chime though you may want to silence it at night...

edit: or possibly I missed an implicit 'oh god I deleted my dirty pics is there any way I can get them back' :p

    Yes.

I've never really thought of most laptop spare parts very useful, unless your have the same make and model, as so many of them are customized. Still, some people would sell their grandmother on eBay if they could. Besides, it shouldn't be too hard to find a complete second hand laptop for about £50-75.
    Exactly............they're on eBay too ;)
