Rules on broadcasting violence in reality TV?

I was always under the impression that for the UK reality shows/chat shows were not allowed to air fights as it is seen as glorifying violence as entertainment (even though Sports are allowed) and was the reason why Jeremy Kyle or Trisha and the like were not allowed to show any violence whilst their American counterparts were (Jerry Springer UK did not show any violence either). And the same with Jersey Shore/Geordie Shore. But then the other day I was off work and flicking through the channels and US Jerry Springer was on (in the daytime) and it was showing people brawling.
First of all, is this actually a real rule or have I been misinformed? And if the former, then is there an exception to shows from overseas?

But I suggest you look at the "context " qualifications in the broadcasting code .
There are NO exemptions for overseas programmes they all have to comply ... As does any programme broadcast from the uk unless it company is regulated elsewhere in the eu .
