I wonder who will leave there job first Sir Alex Ferguson or Arsene Wenger? I would say Ferguson as he is in his 70's and realistically he has nothing left to prove, but how long would Wenger continue if Arsenal's trophy less spell continued.
The simple answer to that is that it would simply be up to Wenger. The board aren't going to do anything to him. Wenger will go when Wenger wants to.
I don't personally think it is a good thing yes Wenger has been a great manager for Arsenal, but he has gone 7 years without trophy and for a club of Arsenal size that simply is not good enough. Everyone says Arsenal are improving and are made of sterner stuff this season but they are already 7 points behind Chelsea and it is unlikely they will win the Champions League, they might win a Cup but there is also a chance they might not. At any other top European club Wenger would of been moved up stairs long ago, they simple would not settle for going so long without a trophy.
Wenger is a good manager no question and he has done well producing great players like Henry, Fabregas, Overmars, Anelka to name but a few and he has done well to balance the books. Wenger has done well in winning 2 Doubles and going a league season undefeated but could you really see the likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid or Bayern Munich settle for a manager who has never won a European trophy in 16 years, who has won 3 out of 16 championships and who has gone 7 successive years without silverware and failed to win a trophy in 11 out of his 16 seasons in charge. I can't. Wenger has too much power at Arsenal and that can't be a good thing for any club, whoever you are.
The trophyless period is not the problem. It's the sorry, deja vu performances Wenger has continuously defended year in, year out. Do you think Fergie would allow that?
He will always guarantee Champions League football, which in this day and age holds more value then winning a pot. I sincerely hope the team wins another cup under Wenger because who knows, it could lead to something special.

But is he over-achieving by getting the CL place or underachieving by not challenging for the title?

Given the stadium size, the club's reasoning to leave Highbury (to remain competitive), income received and quality of player available, Champions League football should be the minimum requirement for Arsenal today. When Wenger arrived, it would have been fairy tale stuff to see the club play in the CL because it was limited to champions only. Now fans expect it. It's easy for a club of Arsenal's stature to finish in the top four, when you put your eggs in one basket. When Arsenal get out of the cups, their form in the league improves considerably and injuries do not rack up. Yes the team stuttered over the line last season, but won something like eight matches in a row, after being eliminated in the FA Cup. In seasons previous, the team begin like champions before collapsing when it comes to the crunch -- the good start helps mantain a top four place as the others are far away.
Today you have four places up for grabs. Chelsea and City in the long term have them snapped up because of their unlimited finances, and United, for how long the Fergie dynasty remains. So, for Arsenal to finish third or above this season is a massive improvement from the last.
Wenger is something between a realist and optimist. He knows the club can not win the league in the short term (under him), especially until FFP comes into place, but knows the talent is there to challenge for the league. The problem is the team often come up short, and he can't explain why.
Surely Nigel Reo-Coker being installed as player/manager is the only realistic option if they have any ambitions of re-living their 'Invincibles' days of 03-04.
Joking aside Arsenal I hate to admit has a lot of foreign admires and if Wenger was to step down I think they would have a lot of people wanting to manage them even with the constraints of the board. It's got a good academy, players are usually good passes and know how to keep the possession. If they had the money and were able to buy the players other teams can they would have won a trophy by now. Arsenal got a really good set up and would be able to attract top managers across Europe.
I'd love Mourinho however I believe he will be Fergies replacement so I don't see it happening. Klopp would be my choice however as someone said I have no faith in our board doing the right thing.

TBH it was your opinion i was waiting for when i started the thread.
Being serious for a moment, the answer would be the same as to the many, many threads on who could replace Sir Alex, as both managers are well and truly safe in their jobs, and have been there for a decades.
So, the usual suspects, Klopp, Moyes, Guadiola, Mourinho etc.
Guardiola and Mourinho wouldn't touch Arsenal with a bargepole. Both are used to having huge transfer budgets and they know they won't get that.
If you ask friends who live in Europe which club they like to watch in the past it is Arsenal even though Chelsea and United have won more cups recently. People may laugh but I do think they could get someone Guardiola just depends on the money and board situation. People just looking at Arsenal from an English perspective but in Europe they are very much liked.
It all depends on what other job opportunities are or will be available at the same time when Wenger calls it a day (which I don't think will be anytime soon), if in a pure 100% hypothetical situation, both the Arsenal and United job's were vacant at the same time, and both clubs were pursuing the same sort of managers, it would be interesting to see who would chose who.
Would Pep favour United or Arsenal, the same for Jose and Klopp, as I feel that both clubs would be looking at the very same people to take over from their lobg standing managers.
The board seem to have been happy for them to keep getting Champions League football. They have had to work hard to achieve it once or twice and the big question over his future would come only at such time as he fails to get them into those positions.
It would be interesting to see whether the decision over his future would be taken out of his hands should that happen.
People talk about Klopp. He would be a huge punt in my opinion. Could work either way.

Although I agree with your comment about Mourinho, I think Guardiola may be made of sterner stuff and take a punt if he were offered it.
But in all honesty I don't see Wenger leaving for a long while, much to the consternation of a few of us Gooners. As a Utd fan said earlier, it doesn't do for the man at the top to have too much power, and I agree with that. Wenger has become Mr Arsenal, from the design of the stadium to whether the players should shake hands in case they pass on bloody germs!

I think there are far more deserving clubs in need of Hughes's services.;)
After his work is complete at QPR.
Warnock must be splitting his sides with laughter.
No, but equally I have no faith in our current board having a clue in picking a replacement.

They are not going to get the two outstanding managers (pep and jose) so whomever they appoint will be wide open for criticism.
Its not 6 months ago since harry was headed for england, so arsenal is hardly a "joke".
Yes it is.

I suspect when the time comes Wenger will probably decide who his replacement is.
