Not a huge amount in the scheme of a large supermarket but after Tesco last week the wheels are starting to fall off the supermarket trolleys.

Where I live we have Morrisons, Sainsburys, Lidl, Aldi & Iceland stores (although the Aldi and Iceland ones have recently just opened in an ex-Focus DIY store, and that is not counting the smaller convenience stores and fuel stations, including a Sainsburys local and a few McColls and a CoOperative fuel station with their shop in there too.
Morrisons has no USP. You could remove all the branding from one of their stores and have no idea who it was.. There's a bit of loyalty in the north of England for Morrisons because that's where it originated but for those of us in the south Morrisons' name really doesn't mean anything at all, just a name that took over from the already struggling Safeway.
streets... Hey, it'd make a good film like CASINO but instead of the mafia losing it's grip on Las Vegas, it's supermarkets losing their grip on the high streets.
It just seems that the low cost ones are taking over from the main four:
It's a ten minute drive from a much older store.
If they closed the older one I wouldn't read too much into it.
Like a previous poster we have every possible supplier within 15 minutes - some of them duplicated.
Competition is intense.

Still, serves them right I suppose. Bloody annoying.
:kitty:
Morrisons self checkouts have got to be some of the worse out there - ASDA, Tesco, Sainsburys all easy to use - Morrisons self check on the other hand..
Aldi have massive plans to go to the next level and when you look at it, and its a matter of opinion, much of their offer isn't considerably worse than that of the major players with prices by comparison a lot cheaper.
I can see (from car parking spaces alone) that this has had a huge impact......
It's worth it for the Sunday trade.
If legislation changed to allow longer opening on Sundays, then there would be a lot of "local" closures.
The cafe is nice though but best avoided at peak times as your in for a long wait.
Sorry for all the staff who are going to be made redundant.
