Fixed or Manipulated...are some people getting them confused?

There's an animal escaped from the zoo and someone ran around sceaming

'The fix has escaped the fix has escaped'
This was taken up by the media and headlines one foot high joined in

'THE FIX HAS ESCAPED, BEWARE IT IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS AND A MAN-EATER, WE HAVE THE FULL STORY FROM AN INSIDER.'

After a few weeks this animal was still at large and had become like Godzilla, and many people claimed to have seen with their very own eyes and shown proof of it's existance. With the weather getting colder and Christmas fast approaching the histerior mounted as the population of every town and village in the land demanded it's capture.

Then one day it was captured, cornered behind a television studio in the capital city. Snivelling and shivering in a crevis
so small it fitted in the palm of the Ofcom official that had tracked it down and he declared to the manic public that had been hounding him to 'do something'

'THIS IS NOT A FIX IT IS A MANIPULATION, IT IS RELATED TO THE FIX BUT NOWHERE NEAR AS DANGEROUS,MANY PEOPLE BELIEVE A MANIPULATION MAKES LIFE MORE INTERESTING, IT IS NOT MY JOB TO EXAMINE MANIPULATIONS'

The Manipulation was returned to the zoo where it settle back and hibernated as is usual for this species. When it awakes it will have plenty to do as will it's cousin the Fix.

So was it a Manipulation or a Fix that went into hibernation? As a matter of interest, from the outside they can look identical to the untrained eye.

appendix:- But what isn't generally known is that some of these animals can and at will morph backwards and forwards between the two personalities to suit the needs of their owners.

I think "Manipulation" stepped over the line last week.

Manipulation could be seen as a more overt form of fixing - or a sub-set.

However, both concern achieving pre-determined or pre-desired outcomes so its arguably a matter of covert vs overt flipsides of the same coin.

A fix is illegal. A manipulation is unfair, but not illegal.

    Seconded.

99.99999% of The X Factor is manipulation - if some contestants are given a better deal than others on the Saturday night show (performance slot, song choices, appropriate comments from the judges) then the voting is being manipulated. Nothing is fixed, however - they're just trying to get the public to vote for the acts they want to keep in.

What happened over the weekend is a grey area. If the bosses saw the voting statistics and decided to throw a sing-off in there (where it was previously unplanned) to disrespect the public vote and out the person with the second fewest votes, then I reckon that's a fix... they're making up the rules as they go along to do whatever they like, regardless of the actual vote. But we don't know what actually happened, it was not clearly stated on the show what would happen on the Sunday (Dermot's comment is ambiguous, "your votes alone" is just a way to place importance on people giving the show money without any real meaning). All we have is some meta material directly related to the show. People weren't misled on the programme itself, but evidence would point towards a fix (when the manipulation didn't seem to be working in their favour).

Almost spot on Derbrain. But there is a third part to the beasts ability to morph. People went to the zoo to see neither the Fix or the Manipulation. They went to see a mythical beast called fairness. People were shocked when, on its escape, it appeared to be the beast fix. They were later so relieved that it was merely a less harmful manipulation that they forget entirely that they had paid good money to see fairness, thus failed to comprehend the beast's morphous nature.

Well thats what Simon hopes will happen, but not all of the public have memories of goldfish.

To say "it's fixed" is incorrect.

..they attempt to fix the result through manipulation. :)

But then the beast known as Fairness could be spotted in the local pub full of admirers. It had escaped from the zoo and was free to do as it wished. Granted, not as many people went to see it at the pub as they would've done at the zoo, and the pub had a much lower budget, but it was given Freedom To rather than Freedom From. All was well.

    Mostly the XF is manipulation.

But last week was close to (and imo was) fraud

So we now have four beasts in the zoo,

    The Fix
    The Manipulation
    The Fairness and
    The Fraud.

If we stop feeding three of them will we really bother to go to the zoo to see The Fairness alone?

    This^^^

Manipulation gets to a certain point where it becomes indistinguishable from blatant fixing. X Factor has now reached that point.

Saving Katie every week when she deserved to go was manipulation.

Not telling the audience until after the votes closed that there would be a sing off (and in fact, specifically telling them that there WOULDN'T be a sing off) is fix. Or rather, a fraud!
