    Birds of a Feather

Though it's nice to see Birds of a Feather back, it doesn't belong on here neither LOTSW.

I suppose it's too much to hope that they'll show The Bill from the beginning. Thankfully the early episodes have been released on DVD.

Why arent they showing Birds of a Feather on GOLD, or will it interupt with the showing Only Fools and Horses for the 1,000,000,000,000 time.

    1)New Channel to promote
2)The show is in the news
    3)Will be a network exclusive

Jonathan Creek been on Watch & Alibi same time last month.

Surprised LOSW as it was on Yesterday which is already a Freeview channel thought most shows would be shows not shown on Freeview before or for a long while.

Anyone know why GOLD won't show normal series of Morcambe & Wise and not just the compilation shows?

So what platforms will this be on? Freesat? Sky? Cable?

Although the launch on Freeview has been highlighted, I fully expect UKTV Drama to appear on Sky (but not Freesat) and Virgin Media in due course.

I guess the nearest equivalent channel is ITV3 and I expect that UKTV Drama will do very well in the BARB TV ratings.

If Drama is a success could this put Alibi at risk?

Right. I expect the only hope we have for UKTV to go FTA on satellite is the new Freeview HD multiplexes.

I don't think so because the two channels cover a different range of programmes although there are some overlaps and because Alibi is already a successful pay-TV subscription channel (unlike the lemon that is Blighty ) so they'll keep it in all probability.

Freeview is by far the lost popular digital TV platform so it makes economic sense to go free to air on Freeview in SD and possibly in HD in the future.

Whilst Freesat has seen very good customer growth this past couple of years with a number of channel joining the platform, Freesat still lags way behind Freeview (and Sky and Virgin Media) in terms of numbers of viewers. Therefore, it's not currently economically viable for UKTV to switch their channels from Sky subscription to Freesat and free to air. In a few years' time, that situation might change though with continued Freesat growth but we'll have to wait and see.

So do you think this will mean they will get rid of the drama and sitcoms off Yesterday now and go 100% factual with it as it used to be. This would be a better balance of programming for Freeview too as FV will get both channels.

As for Birds of a Feather on GOLD it certainly would belong on the channel but at least this means Freeview will get the show to watch!

I thought I had a recollection that they used to have a drama channel in the past too.

Interesting that they haven't used a stupid name for this venture.

Not from the beginning but I did contact UKTV yesterday and it's from Series 14 Episode 89 1998 entitled "Deep End" a 90 minute special the start of the Eddie and Rosie storyline.

I can see UKTV putting Drama at 133 on Sky (GOLD+1's current slot) then moving that further down the EPG.

For me that's when it started getting worse I'm afraid. I can't be the only one who prefers the 1984-1997 'plodding feet' era when it was a pure procedural police drama rather than gradually turning into a glorified soap.

Shame they cant show old time classics like Bouquet or Barbed Wire or Within These Walls or even the early Crossroads, just always programs we have seen fairy recently.

I agree, there's a huge archive of material belonging to both the BBC and ITV/Fremantle which could be used but isn't. Channels are just wanting to be as 'safe' as possible. The very thought of showing a 70s studio based drama must give them nightmares of lost advertising revenue!

I picked up the first series of 70s hospital drama 'Angels' on DVD recently, which I really enjoyed and wondered why something so well written and made is never repeated on any of the hundreds of digital channels we now have.

They did, it was the original UK Gold, before they altered it to a comedy only channel.
Shame they haven't added the original black & white Doctor Who's onto it as that channel used to do.
