Basically it's a homophobic environment so they don't usually come out.

    Thanks.

I'm not an engineer, but impression from student engineers' parties is quite a misogynistic environment. Lacks female civilising influence! Rugby songs about bestiality, rather than poetry evenings. I suppose that homophobia is inevitable in that environment.

There's an interesting study here that documents why gays working in engineering rarely come out.

Can you give a summary for thickos like me?

It's a study based on interviews with 17 gay/bi students at a US university and uncovers some really controversial things like that teenagers like to use "that's so gay!" as an insult...

Pope Julius III (ruled 1550-1555). Famous as “a skilled expert in canon law,” and a patron of Michelangelo and Palestrina, Julius also “created one of the most notorious homosexual scandals in the history of the papacy.” Just before he became pope, then-Cardinal Giovanni Maria del Monte fell in love with a 15-year old ragamuffin named Innocenzo. Two years later del Monte, now Pope Julius III, made young Innocenzo a cardinal and his “chief diplomatic and political agent." Though Church scholars insist that Julius only wanted Innocenzo to pet his monkey, Crompton agreed with the Venetian ambassador, who reported that the young “Ganymede” “shared the pope's bedroom and bed.” The “Cardinal-Monkey” Innocenzo’s glory days ended when his papal partner died in 1555. Innocenzo himself died in 1577.

does a scholar and pope count?

Currently their are thousands of scientist who have contributed to the modern era who most people have no idea about partly because we are obsessed with the entertainment industry.

To be fair, most of us are unaware of what scientists do, regardless of their sexuality, even though we rely on them so much - and the above comment of yours, I couldn't agree more.

Exactly. I think most people would struggle to name ten scientists who are well-known for being raging heterosexuals. They don't tend to have the paparazzi following their private lives.

He had a wife called Minnie Mouse.

The judge said he couldn't divorce her just because she had buck teeth.
Mickey said " No judge - I said she was f**king Goofy" :D

Who appointed you arbiter of contributions to humanity?

More importantly how are you pulling your weight?

When people come out with crap like this, it is nothing more than petty collusion, as if being straight aligns you more than a gay person with the achievements of Newton, Einstein or any number of great scientists and thinkers.

Heath never came out did he ?
    All the rest are Arts/Media.

Florence Nightingale ? Interesting, never heard that one.

Sensitive middle/upper class Victorian women certainly would gravitate towards seeking emotional and physical warmth from other sensitive women because Victorian men were complete utter bastards and treated women abysmally.

It was said axe murderer Lizzie Borden might have been of that persuasion.

I've never seen any proof that Heath actually was gay. mungobrush is working on the brilliant, infallible basis that if a man has never had a high profile sexual relationship with a woman, he simply MUST be gay.

No, he just shared a moustache with Freddie Mercury. I think that's his reasoning on that one.
