I never understand people who don't seem to get that this isn't maths but pop music where people are expressing their feelings about things and get caught up and argue the fact the minute someone calls someone a 'legend' or 'icon' or whatever.
Though if you are taking the term by it's definition I'd say some of the stories surrounding Belinda and the Go Gos have gone down in legend.
I heard she might be working with Rick Nowels again. Is this true? No other popette in the eighties was as consistent as Belinda was with the three albums he produced.
what other way is there to take a term ot phrase than by its definition?
If you're just going to disregard what words actually mean you'd be as well describing her as Belinda Carlisle 'octopus'
Oh don't you know 'octopus' now means 'singer'
no because she's no legend. Nothing to do with taste. A couple of solo hits does not make a legendary career.
'Mildly successful Belinda Carlisle returns' would have been a more apt thread title
lol.. exactly, it doesnt matter how you interpret the term 'legend' belinda carlisle does fit either.
she was ok... thats all, hell i prefer her to the wailing bints like carey, dion, aguilera, houston etc but carlisle isnt in the same league. sorry.

Shes been touring for years. She can hardly be described as "mildly successful" when she has continued through 3 decades.
I use to love her back in the 80,s but went to see her in concert, shocking she can't sing live very well. Struggles to hold a note. I felt embarrassed for her.!
Really? I'm not a huge fan of hers, but I saw her a couple of years ago at a Here and Now show with other 80's artists and her voice was pretty much unchanged from the 80's. She sounded much better than a lot of the other artists that were there. I like the Go-gos more than her solo stuff. A lot of her solo stuff is a little too MOR for me. I like the slightly more edgy sound of the Go-gos. The new single is pleasant but in the same vein as her other solo work. It's good she made another single, but it doesn't blow me away.

is there such a thing?
the last couple there are stretching hit singles a tad. One of them reached the lofty peak of 66
she seems to have done so little in the last 17 years that even Belinda Carlisle forgot about Belinda Carlisle. Hardly the mark if a legend. More the sign of someone who had a number one and then a couple of hits for a few years nearly two decades ago.

Do you have to have continued success to be a legend? I'm not that huge a fan of Belinda, but I think there are some artists that have such an impact in the first years of their career that they are legends forever even if they don't have another hit. The Go-gos were one of the first all girl bands who played their own instruments that I remember seeing and for me they and Belinda are legends just for that reason.

Well that's obviously your point of view and opinion which you are absolutely entitled to. For Belinda fans it's going to be somewhat different and they will regard her as a legend.
I mean I think we need to be a bit realistic here, she was no one hit wonder - she had hits with
Heaven is Aplace on Earth
I Get Weak
leave a light on
Circles in the sand
We want the same thing
Live your life be free
Summer rain
In too deep
Always breaking my heart
california
These are pretty well known Belinda hits, and probably very recognisable to anyone over the age of 23 - yes obviously today's teen generation aren't going to know who she is, she hasn't done anything since 1999, they might know A Place on Earth at best. Aswell as this, Belinda has quite a distinctive voice, so anyone who knows her and is familiar with her is going to recognise one of her songs instantly.
So, to her fans she is a legend I.e. Held in high regard and remembered fondly and often comes up in 80s/90s pop nostalgia. To those who don't like her or are not familiar with her she's not a legend.

I was in first year when Heaven is a Place on Earth was out.
I've been a big follower of music for longer than I can remember, I have a freakish musical knowledge that has me held in great demand for pub quiz teams, if i were a footballer I'd be Gareth Bale such is the demand.
Anyway, apart from a couple of tracks I'd be hard pressed to name more than a couple of tracks. They'd all before 1991, except for Lemonheads song from 93.
Joe Bloggs in the street would know Heaven and in probably 9 out of 10 cases that would be it.
Legendary acts do tend to have more than one memorable songs.
There are plenty of bands and singers that I like but I am smart enough to not confuse liking something for them being legendary.

Lololol I like the Gareth Bale comparison:)
Point taken, maybe it's because I'm a fan. I remember as a kiddie (born in 84) all my friends knew Belinda and her hits. We still reminisce about our childhood, pop music etc. and she'll be one that we would say "do you remember her song....?" and everyone will go " yeah" - again though maybe it's a fan thing.
I know one thing though, she was much bigger here than she was back home in the US.

in the States she's probably better known for her Playboy spread, which I neither seen nor lingered over. Ever.
The Go-Gos were bigger there than here though. And probably even bigger in France since Joan of Arc was a member.

Haha that's funny, Joan of Arc, never saw that before but now....lol:)
Actually, when I heard she did playboy I kinda had to look it up, just to see what shape she was in...hmm she was ok.

Jesus. Pop quiz: name five that aren't Heaven is a Place on Earth or from after 1993.
That would be a tough one.

She is a legend.
You're getting your 'L's' mixed up their amigo.
Continuing through three decades is 'Longevity' not 'legendary'
And you are getting your their/there/they're mixed up.
