My other half lectured/worked in sexual health for almost 20 years. I remember a while ago, she suggested that the serious pneumonia - coupled with the fact that he has reputation for being quite promiscuous - may point to HIV. Obviously it could be nothing of the sort, and I really hope it isn't anything serious.
He really seemed to go off the rails after his Mum died, and I don't think he's ever really got over that. I wish him all the best.
