Felt tip all your other teeth black and then you're sorted - you'll match!! :D

Sorry, I have no serious answer to this post. People with missing front teeth always makes me giggle. :o

With an attitude like yours no wonder people are so self-conscious when they lose their front teeth, usually through no fault of their own

Glad the OP and smiling-angel got their teeth sorted though :)

Im just back from the dentist and boy do I feel ill,......
A grand total of £1,900,now that made me cry!!!

OMFG, I thought there was an upper limit on dental charges!

You poor, poor thing. All those horrible things done and then a bill like that.

Wish I'd not read these dental threads, as I have to go to mine tomorrow. I don't think I have anything that needs doing, and thank god I'm on NHS free treatment. However, I want to ask her if I can have some non-NHS free cosmetic stuff done to improve my teeth, not so sure now though, I was thinking maybe £200-£300 would be maximum amount to spend. Wow. :(

Sadly I just cannot get a NHS dentist so I have to go private.
It makes my blood boil when I think that I started work on my 16th birthday full time and still 30 years later Im still working full time.

The ammount of times Ive seen those schemes where you pay monthy and thought "nah, its not worth it",famous last words or what??

I,ll feel better once the swelling and numbness goes away, but the bills gonna hurt me for a long time for sure.
And at least I can now smile!!:D

If your front teeth are healthy....no old fillings;crowns or veneers....but have just darkened/gone yellower/greyer with age.....ask about home bleaching.....if your a suitable case, bleaching can and does produce fantastic results....Unfortunately the bleach will only lighten natural tooth enamel.....It should cost between £160-£200 to bleach your upper teeth.....but remember if you have old crowns or veneers then bleaching is not for you.....You can buy bleaching kits on the internet for a lot less.....don`t do it as the bleach can damage unsuitable teeth and these need to be checked by a dentist prior to bleaching+ most bleaches sold on the internet are too strong....additionally you will need to have a custom made bleaching tray made.....an impression will need to be taken.....home kits rely on you making your own tray.....trust me you`ll make a shit one.:o:o...The tray has to have a spacer next to the front surface of the teeth and only a laboratory can do this.

Im just back from the dentist and boy do I feel ill,I ended up having a bridge of 5 teeth to secure my 2 front ones.

I had roots taken out and a tooth taken out,I now have temporary in intill the 2nd May.

A grand total of £1,900,now that made me cry!!!

I know it`s a lot of money....but I can assure you that you have not been ripped off....This is a very fair price for a 5 unit bridge....Trust me everything to do with dentistry is expensive....I wont bore you with the costs involved but you would be shocked at the overheads incurred in running a practice......everything we use is specialised and very expensive.....as an example my drills have tiny bulbs in their tips so I can see better....one of these bulbs blew today.....replacement cost £60...for a bulb:eek:....Each drill is £600-£700
....and don`t ask about the costs of materials.:(:( .....that said some private fee`s are absolutely ridiculous.....but you`v paid a fair fee for your bridge.....although I`am sure it does`t feel like it.
This is the problem with dentistry......it`s a very expensive game to be in.....the Government knows this and basically can`t afford to adequately fund it......If they paid Dentists a fair fee for a core dental service....then more Dentists would provide NHS treatment....but they wont.....It`s all politics my friends.

ps....90% of my work is NHS.....However I have to charge private fee`s for expensive cosmetic work......You would`t expect the NHS to pay for a boob or nose job......Under the current system if you had your 5 unit bridge made on the NHS then the laboratory charges would be greater than the fee the dentist would receive from the Government.....in effect the Dentist would end up paying for your bridge out of their own pocket....Ultimately they would go out of business. Its all a lot more complex than the lay person appreciates.

Many thanks for that stephanieplum,I will admit Im a little worried about going into work today.
My only defence is that I was ridiculed and made fun of by visitors, customers and staff and I reported it to my bosses and told them I wanted to be taken out of that situation untill I can get my front teeth back in,in my eyes anyway, they refused(he did say it didnt warrant having time off work)so they knew it was distressing me yet they forced me back to have it done all over again, dont forget I was also working all day Saturday and Sunday.
I told them I was going home because I didnt want to be put in that situation again.

It may fall on deaf ears and I may get a huge b******ing from them,I,ll just have to accept it.

He just didnt have a clue on how much it upset me,maybe I was being too sensitive Im not sure but the longer I was in work the worse it became for me.

No way were you being too sensitive! If it was your back teeth maybe, or an injury to a part of your body that could be disguised/covered, they may have had a valid point.

I could maybe even give them the benefit of the doubt if you had a job in a small office with no contact with the public - even then I'd still say they were being malicious.

Do they realise that they wouldn't even have been getting 100% work from you if you had stayed anyway - how can you concentrate on work with teeth missing - especially in the public eye.

I know that they are business people and have to make money etc, but in that situation you would have though that an emplyer would be more understanding.

Cross on your behalf..........good luck today - let us know how you get on!

Just an update on my visit. I am definitely going to have one crown done - it's £300 a go She may be able to do something cheaper with the other two teeth that are badly discoloured due to having the nerves removed a few years ago. If not, they will need crowns too, but I can think about those at a later date. Two weeks time for my next appointment. The tooth that is being done currently has about 75% gold filling in it. Do you think I'm within my rights to ask for that gold? I mean it may be worth some money melted down!

Yes it`s yours.....how much gold is in it....Who knows??.....a jeweller may offer you a couple of pounds.....If that.....Gold fillings or crowns actually don`t contain that much Gold....Pure gold is too soft for dental use so it`s mixed with other precious metals in order to increase it`s strength and make it less malleable.....I remember a patient of mine taking an old gold crown to the jewellers years ago and he was offered £1....I collect all the old crowns I remove and every 5 years or so I send them off to a specialist firm which collects precious metals from dentists.....I divide the money received between the staff.

Thanks for that, doesn't seem like it will be worth my while asking then. If I do get it, I'll send it to you then. ;)

any dentists (who know what they are doing) on here? My dentist replaced the whole filling in a tooth (without asking me), charged me £300 for the privilege, and the tooth now hurts with hot and cold sensations.....

I've also just lost a front tooth. It had a veneer on it which cracked or 'split'. My dentist filled in the crack and said it would be OK (I had my doubts at the time!). A few days later the filling came out (as I thought it might) and the following morning whilst eating something pretty innocent the tooth just came away.

I can't help thinking that when the same dentist replaced an adjacent crown once, he had to really force it in (I could tell he wasn't in the best of moods, for some reason) and it was pressing against the tooth that came out. I'm sure the crack in the veneer appeared because of the pressure from this crown. Then, I presume, the tooth had lost some of its strength from the cracked veneer. Now I'm looking at an expensive crown to replace it with. I don't see him for a few days but I guess that's what he'll do.

Does anybody know how to find a good dentist? I've thought of maybe contacting the local dental labs that make the crowns etc and see if they can recommend anyone.

Swynmor1963, if you're out there, I would very much appreciate your comments on the above.

    Thanks for your help, folks.
