I don't understand why all BBC family sitcoms are now based around a dysfunctional family when they used to have such gems like Brittas Empire. Slapstick at its best.

I think they were so stunned at the success of My Family (much like the rest of the sane population) that they thought they were on a winnner

What a brilliant re-run.Forgot how funny this was.All the actors seem to complement each other.I now record it every afternoon to watch in the evening.
Doesnt Julia St.John look great in those shorts?
    Regards

I preferred her in those short tennis skirts! :)
Love this series: great to see Chris basically reproducing how the character of Rimmer (from Red Dwarf) would have fared if he'd been running a leisure centre! :)

I'm glad there's such love for The Brittas Empire here. The reruns on Paramount a couple of years back were required viewing in the Chuff household. I recall an episode with a runaway emu destroying a recording on Songs of Praise ... all deeply silly and totally slapstick. Marvellous.

Loved the part where Colin hung an electric fire over the pool after Gordon ordered him to heat it. That is it about Brittas, not at all afraid to portray slapstick humour even when it is in competely bad tase.

I didn't realise TBE lasted as long as 7 series.

I too find that some old sit-coms reruns aren't as funny as they were originally.

I got a 2.4 Children DVD and still found it quite funny.

I can't for the life of me figure out why the BBC never repeat this!

Happily watched a couple of episodes last night. What a treat! Still so funny. Vastly better than those mediocre "middle class family" sitcoms that clog up the schedules now.

    Last night:
Helen Brittas trying to hide a porn mag with a picture of her as a reader's wife; Carol the receptionist ("Welcome to Whitbury New Town leisure centre, how may I help you?") trying to hide the kitten she has bought for the children who live in her desk drawers.

    Excellent. :D

I used to love Carol bowing her head and going "Yes MsssssBrisssss!" :D

Loved this tv series, one of my favourite aspects was the Tim and Gavin relationship about which Brittas was totally clueless. Saw the episode the other day where Gavin's fiancee returns to pick up where they left off - very funny!

Carol was my favourite character though, Colin always gave me the creeps!

I do! AND I quite liked it. Basically, CB can raise the quality of ANYTHING he's in. As was said of Ace Rimmer: "What a guy!" :)

I've been watching the re-runs on Drama channel here in the UK on Freeview. Only series 1-5 are available on streaming services Britbox & ITVX, when there was actually 7 series in total.

The full 7 series were on Britbox/ITVX up till a few months ago. As I watched the last few series via this. For some reason they've removed series 6 and 7 recently.

Maybe they want to forget they ever existed?

The show had a perfect ending in 1994 but the BBC brought back with new writers in 1996. It was a shadow of its former self and the new writers often didn't "get" the characters

Series 5, currently airing on Drama. This thread will be locked sooner or later - for some undisclosed reason old threads aren't favoured, and new ones are encouraged to open up.

I dread to think of Digital Spy's Carbon Footprint.

    Yes, it’s weird.

If left, they would rapidly disappear if no one was interested, but if some busybody reports them, ‘support’ fell the need to do a knee jerk close.

I liked most of the cast but my favourite character was Colin with his septic hand, weak bladder and leaky rhubarb poultice.

Loved 2.4 children - think it had to end with the untimely death of Gary Olson.
