Web Standards? How many years did we have to put up with MS non-standard, standards? If it is 30% faster, then why don't it show that on windows 8?

I don't use it myself on my own computer, but I do use it on another computer and it don't seem any faster and would most people notice anyway?

All the browsers are much the same, I use them all (main ones that is) and don't see any real difference.

If you've got that on Windows 7 you are doing something wrong...

Ditto, so it comes down to usability and features (subjective).

their js is supposed to be much faster.

it probably is. microsoft are good at that kind of thing.

always wary of new IE releases. have to rewrite my site again.

Too many features some browsers have got in, Look at opera, trying to be everything, also in the early days, Netscape Communicator. firefox seems to be going that way again. I suppose this is why i like Chromium and it offshoots, apart from Chrome itself.

it is a browser and you add stuff to it, even so i don't think he later versions are as good as the earlier versions.

That's because users care for different subsets of those features. For example, I prefer Firefox to Chrome because it has better usability and features for my way of browsing. But I appreciate that many users don't care for the features I care for. That's why it's subjective.
Look at opera, trying to be everything, also in the early days,

Funny you should say that. Firstly Opera had a reputation for being both light and feature-packed.

Nevertheless, the recent Chrome-like Opera 15+ has jettisoned a lot. But for long-time Opera users this has not gone down well at all (look at their forums). Many Opera users despise Chrome precisely because of its feature-poverty.

And that's why I don't like Chrome/Chromium. Or more accurately, I don't dislike them, I just prefer Firefox.
it is a browser and you add stuff to it,

Hence extensions. It's the combination of Firefox + specific extensions that's the winning combination for me.
even so i don't think he later versions are as good as the earlier versions.

The later versions are much better.

As a web developer I can tell you that IE has been much less of a headache from IE 9 onwards. It's a pity that MS didn't make IE 9 available for XP. Then we could reasonably ask clients on XP to move up to IE 9 and save us lots of development time! :)

i wonder if i'll be able to drop
a, img {
border:none;
}
from my style sheets any time soon.

Not if your paranoia has reached that level....

IE's got really rubbish - "a problem with this web page has cause Internet Explorer to reopen....." 12x a day.

That sounds like an Add-on problem. I use IE and home and work all the time and have hardly any issues.

that's certainly not the norm.

IE is like MS. solid and unimaginative.

to answer my own question IE11 does not automatically put a border around images used as links.

hoorah

Oh is *that* what you were getting at? Your CSS is to not put borders around any anchor *and* (separately) any image.

For just <img> that are inside <a> you wouldn't have the comma.

Yeah, it got to be, IE can't be that bad otherwise no one at all would use it.

That's because users care for different subsets of those features. For example, I prefer Firefox to Chrome because it has better usability and features for my way of browsing. But I appreciate that many users don't care for the features I care for. That's why it's subjective.

I think some of these features are what slow some of these browsers down. I use to love firefox, but they lost the plot on version 3 and above. i not a great fan of chrome, but it is better than firefox.
Funny you should say that. Firstly Opera had a reputation for being both light and feature-packed.

and yet i did not find it was that light, but I did like it when it first came out, but the way it handled cookies was a pain. Now it is just another Chrome clone.

Nevertheless, the recent Chrome-like Opera 15+ has jettisoned a lot. But for long-time Opera users this has not gone down well at all (look at their forums). Many Opera users despise Chrome precisely because of its feature-poverty.

So they will have a shock now it is a chrome clone.

I only use about 4 extensions anyway
The later versions are much better.

I still think they lost the plot on version 3.

The only slowdown I've ever noticed is on initial start-up. And nowadays I notice no difference between Firefox and Chrome - even with the 20+ add-ons I use in Firefox.

They didn't lose the plot for me. It's gotten better.

I have Opera but don't use it that much, so I'm largely going by what people have said. Having said that, looking at the forums, for every browser there are some users who complain that it is bloated or a memory hog while others experience no such problems. Maybe it just depends on their exact environment.
So they will have a shock now it is a chrome clone.

Indeed they have! However, Opera are making 12.x available for download for the time bieng. The plan with 15+ is to gradually add back many (but not all) jettisoned features. Basically, after switching to WebKit they had to rewrite.
We all like different things.

Indeed. That's why these discussions are largely subjective. Features and speed are objective insofar as one can conduct tests. But the weight we attach to them is subjective.
I only use about 4 extensions anyway

I suspect most users use zero.

Firefox is terrible these days. It crashes a lot and I see way more of the spinning beach ball than I want to see. I'm considering going back to Chrome or even Apple Safari. It was a great browser in the past but it's just got more and more bloated over time. It's like IE is or was. I kinda remember Netscape but I never used it.

I'll let you into a secret - IE's always been rubbish :p I haven't properly used it since 2003 when every man and his dog used IE6 (apart from one or two sites that required it) but even then it was rubbish. We had no choice though as Firefox did not yet exist and Netscape had been more or less killed off by the Micro$oft Monopoly. Browser wars anyone? :D

If it crashes a lot, I guess it must be more to do with your personal set up/system than FF. I can't remember the last time I had any trouble with it.

Not for me. But neither do Chrome, IE or Opera which I also use. I've never experienced this "browser X crashes all the time" complaint that many users have with every browser.
It was a great browser in the past but it's just got more and more bloated over time.

Not noticed. E.g., whenever I check, memory usage seems comparable to Chrome.

No, it hasn't. My view is that it was rubbish prior to IE 4. Netscape was significantly better. IE 4 was marginally better than Netscape 4 but largely a matter of taste. IE 4-6 was better than alternatives. When Firefox emerged it was significantly better than IE 6.

Ironically, the MS monopoly made it easier for challengers to emerge because it caused MS to rest on its laurels!
