Why do dwarfs not work in shops?

In all my life I have never seen a dwarf working in a shop, not even a shoe shop where their small stature would be a plus.

How come?

I've never seen a Japanese person working in a supermarket but that doesn't mean they don't work in supermarkets

A dwarf works at the bakery in my local village

Movies and panto is true as I know these things pay well. Perhaps being a dwarf is a strong USP and so they can make better money other ways... dwarf tossing aside.

Fear of any potential discrimination, perhaps?

I think in this day and age people are much more broadminded and accepting of little folk especially with the popularity of the Lord of rings, Hobbit movies.

Maybe because the vast majority of disabled people think better than that?

No it is not really a disability as far as I know and they would not recieve money for this.

I don't have achondraplasia but am short (3'3) and I volunteered in a Barnardo's store during university. Does that count? I worked in John Lewis too as a sales assistant.

I would imagine it's law of averages more than anything else. It isn't a really common condition so the likelihood of seeing someone with the condition in the first place is chance.

    That.

I'm not sure if she is a dwarf (might be a bit tall*), but there is a very small person who works at my local Tesco.

It's most likely that because there aren't that many you rarely run into them, I rarely if ever see one in the street, but that doesn't mean they never go outside ;)

*I can't remember the height requirement.

I've seen little people working in Top Shop and The Range. I'm only 4ft 8 myself (although don't qualify for 'dwarfism'- wrong build and am just a shortarse) and have worked in retail in the past. Before the days of health and safety, my boss used to let me climb the shelves to reach items on the top rather than drag out a stepladder (that's when shelves were shelves!). I loved it. I did exactly the same as other staff members, including hoicking sacks of spuds about (actually, I used to get told off for that!). Happy days!

    Short staffed.

Can't get on the corporate ladder if your legs are too little to climb it.

You really should look up Achondroplasia and other forms of dwarfism, it is a disability, there are many parts of the condition that people aren't aware of and it isn't quite the barrel of laughs that people seem to think. Hydrocephelus is very common with dwarfism, that can lead to death, early arthritis, spinal stenosis, breathing problems, dental problems, and then of course dealing with ignorant fools who think you're just a joke.
