That's a superb signal for such a low-powered tx Andy!

I'm now hoping that that mad Es cloud that's been over the Balkans for the last 2 hours or so will start extending it's influence to the UK.

Wow that is a very nice signal, cool song!

That would be nice if that happened Nick, so fingers crossed!

Thanks Nick it's not bad for a vertical dipole at gutter height via 1 leg of sat shotgun cable the horizontal dipole does not receive as much as the vertical dipole which does confirm that there's nothing wrong with the 3 element aerial.

It would be difficult to mount my 3 element aerial vertical on my rotatable mast so I will leave the + aerials as they are and knock up another dipole to go on the roof when the weather improves.

I have had a few stations on 87.7 in the past hour but no RDS so I am hoping for the same as you.

Thanks for the comments Andy. It sounds like you had Bayern 1 at the same strength as me, if not better. Chances are you had the Oberammergau site. I was lucky to catch the local PI code before they returned to their regional programme. All the RDS Spy data can be found here: https://www.box.com/s/af587627ebd3bae16512 so if anybody wants to see this, just download the RDS Spy software from http://rdsspy.com/index.php/download and double click on the file. This file was actually started on the 7th and runs for two days. You can get the local time each station was recorded by clicking on View > Basic RDS Services > PS & PTY History while running the file. Use the play/stop slider bar to speed up/slow down/pause the file.

TRBC is Tele Radio Buon Consiglia (spelling from memory) in Italy.

If I can help with other recordings or codes please fire away. Sorry to be too engrossed in my own UNIDs for the moment though. ;O)

    Good DX all!

Gone. Was weak compared to yesterday.

Agreed. Sherlock made it all look like we were going to be in for an exact repeat of yesterday's DX. I think it tried but just wasn't quite as good in the end. The paths were slightly skewed compared to yesterday afternoons. You can check this using the "Query the DX-Sherlock database" search function.

Sherlock suggests this might not be over just yet.

    Good DX!

I hope so too. I checked the tvcomm website & saw E skip overloaded all over Europe, although it did not make much of an impression on band 2. At least things are improving though compared to a few days ago.

Edit: 88.8 north Africa a moment ago.

Thanks for the info John just one thing that is bothering me is Bayern 1 was received on the vertical dipole on the Denon but the Ikasu radio connected to the horizontal dipole did not pick Bayern up even though Bayern tx's are horizontally polarised.

If Bayern was from the 10w tx then that's good going but 500w is also good going as well.

I heard some stations earlier this afternoon but nothing since.

    Hi folks,

I left my radio on 87.6Mhz and could hear Chaine 3 from Algeria.

I've just gone back to the radio, after watching TV in the other room, and found the RDS saying this -> "RVO VOOC"
http://i1064.photobucket.com/albums/u379/brumlad36/100_3163.jpg Does anyone have an idea where this would have come from? All audio had gone when I discovered the RDS. Radio was still tuned to 87.6Mhz

    Cheers,

    Chris.

No idea on that one Chris.

The Es were patchy and mostly weak here this evening with some stations from the east like Slovakia with a few weak North Africans and also Greece on 87.6. The SpE was peaking whilst we were having tea as Fun Radio on 87.7 was 3 bars on the Sony XDR-F1HD with RDS, and there were others on the band at this time (about 6.15 pm BST). So a bit of a disappointment compared to yesterday.

    ** Personal Skegness 'First'

Another interesting day, though not a patch on yesterday. Everything seemed to be gearing itself up for a repeat of yesterday's conditions, but it just didn't quite get there.

To begin with, Italy, Morocco, Algeria and a tentative Western Sahara (though perhaps a new station in Morroco) and Spain kicked off the day around 1000 this morning. I had to go out for a few hours after that but left RDS Spy and WaveLab recording 87.5 (looking for Turkey). On my return home I just had splatter from Algeria on 87.6 which surfaced around 1500.

Then came the main opening. There may have been similarities to yesterday but it kicked off with a welcome opening to Greece. This was followed by Bosnia & Herzegovina, Italy, Algeria, Romania, Austria, Hungary, back to Algeria and Italy, then back to the Balkans with Croatia and Serbia. Most of the activity was below 94 MHz, but occasionally Algeria peaked as high as 101.2 (yesterday's Balkan Es went to the top of the band, by the way, but the signals were nowhere near good enough to produce RDS).

As yesterday, the lift finished with off with a good half an hour of weak signals at the very bottom of the band - just enough to tease us and make us think the opening wasn't over. Everything was gone by 1930.

Regarding the tentative Western Sahara on 87.6: The PI code was 1283 which, after checking through the FM List, appears to be unique to "MFM Sahara", unless there is an outlet of this network on 87.6 in Morocco. As Ruud says, there is a Western Sahara "MFM Sahara" on 107.1 but presumably there will be other transmitters elsewhere in the country.

Some more recordings, including another couple of unidentifieds:

I think the first station might be Radio Bum108 from Serbia. The second could be Radio 1 from Hungary (again, though on a different frequency today!). Can somebody please confirm these?

    Thanks again and good DX!

Sorry Chris, couldn't begin to suggest possibilities for that one. Does your Blaupunkt retain characters and then some get overwritten? This could be a corruption of more than one PS name if so. RDS Spy does the same thing.

    Cheers

Thanks John and Nick, for checking. Google was not my friend on this occasion, because it didn't bring up any European stations. I know the radio was not already showing any RDS when I tuned it to 87.6Mhz. It was just showing the frequency. I wasn't listening at the time, so wasn't able to hear the language being used. It may have been one of those Italian stations with dynamic text, in the middle of its scroll etc.

    Cheers for now,

    Chris.

Lots of signals up to the top of the band now. Interestingly, some French heard on 87.7 and 106.3, possibly the Nice area.

Started off with Italy, then moved west across Corsica, Sardinia and southern France, now in Catalunya and moving into Valencia.

    Good DX!
