Which is? I never listen to words so cant recognise it
"Used To" by Joslyn. There's a version on YouTube but it's the original, uptempo version. The "Chill" version is infinitely better as it gives the lyrics a lot more power imo.
Also Distance from Christina Perri. I think for anyone who has experienced the pain of loving someone we know, but never can have would relate to this song.
My Immortal was played at my brother's funeral, very beautiful lyrics.
I think, 'My Immortal', Johnny Cash's cover of 'Hurt', equally, Evanescence's 'Hello', Jay Brannan's 'The Freshmen', Tegan and Sara's 'Call it Off', and Damien Rice's 'Older Chests' are all quite sad, or sobering songs, that come to mind.
EDIT: also, though I'm not sure theyve been in the last 13 years or so, Eva Cassidy's covers of Fields of Gold, Over the Rainbow and Time after Time. These are personal sad songs for me because theyve been played at some family funerals. Eva has such emotion in her voice. I actually cannot listen to Over the Rainbow at all, because it upsets me too much to go right back to that moment.
Glasvegas - Daddy's Gone
The Twilight Sad - Nil
Mogwai - Hunted By a Freak
Antony and the Johnsons - Hope There's Someone
Elbow - Powder Blue
Hope of the States - Me Ves Y Sufres
Interpol - Wrecking Ball
Nick Cave - No More Shall We Part
Sophia - I Left You
Tindersticks - Yesterday's Tomorrows
I Like Trains - Death is the End
Britney Spears - Everytime
Bellefire - I Can't Cry Hard Enough (original is older than 13 years but I love their version)
Gabrielle - Over You
Biffy Clyro - Folding Stars (it is about his mother)
I know they're not from the last 13 years, but both this and 'You Have Been Loved' immediately came to mind. Songs like these show exactly how talented a songwriter George Michael is.
It's my fave from him. I just listen to it, I never cry but I get SO close. I love how he dedicates the song each time he performs it. Beautiful.

I'm not sure if they were in the last 13 years or not.
More recently - Prof Green and Emeli Sande : Read all about it
That was released before 2000. But I agree! I heard it on Buffy, such a great song.
I would say Evanescence- Lost In Paradise is slightly more sad to me than My Immortal. But that's just my opinion, they are both amazing songs.
*Ahem* - a cover of a song by Terry Jacks from 1974. Which is in fact an adaptation of a French song.
Definitely one of the saddest songs of the last 40 years though, Terry Jacks' version.

One of the best covers ever!
I also wanna add Leona Lewis-Fireflies http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z5W-NkFxS-Y It's about suicide
This for me too. Cried so much when I saw it live, and we played it at my mum's funeral in 2011, was beautiful.
i second this as well - the song is very sad and beautiful. Do you know about whom she is singing about, has she revealed that somewhere?
