  Until they catch the perpetrator they don't. The Birmingham ones weren't random at all, both victims knew their killer.

  I understand that this is quite popular as part of gang initiation i.e. the stabbing or shooting of a random stranger to gain the acceptance of one's 'street peers'.
  
  Nothing fills me with horror more than this idea; a completely random death for something that is so abysmally pathetic in the context of general existence.

  I didn't know that. So I presume they got the killer, like I say, I haven't heard a thing since the day it happened, hasn't been on the news since.

  IIRC that's mostly a myth.That isn't to say it's never happened, but it's not widespread.
  
  As has been said, most "random" stabbings aren't that random.

  What is it with weapons? Round here the order still seems to be, mostly, that if people are really that childish that they can't sort a disagreement out like adults, then a few punches are thrown and everyone is happy again.
  I don't often hear of stabbings, other cities are not short of people with knives by the sounds of it.
