Problem printing with HP Deskjet 2540 with Windows Vista

I got my uncle an Acer Aspire M3610 engineering model from Amazon with an HP Deskjet 2540 printer for his shop. It has Windows Vista and is using my Wi-Fi connection from upstairs
Whether I try to connect the printer via Wi-Fi or USB, it just won't print. It takes me to the troubleshooter and Microsoft FixIt, but that's telling me there's no problems with it
It took me a while to get the computer to see the printer via a Wi-Fi connection when I tried a couple of weeks ago, and I thought that'd make it work, but as I mentioned above, it didn't
I just don't know what to do next and I feel like I'm hitting my head against a brick wall
Does anybody have any ideas what I can do? I'm presuming that the printer is compatible with Windows Vista
If anybody needs to know any more technical information about the PC, then just ask

Go here http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?os=2093&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&sw_lang=&product=5295967 and down load the latest driver. It wouldn't hurt to go to printer management and remove the old driver first before you install the new one.
Does it work pluged into a different pc?
I've tried that and it still doesn't work. I haven't tried it on another PC yet
For some reason, it just does not want to connect properly to the printer
Am I best connecting this wirelessly or via USB?
I've been using PCs for over 25 years and never had this much trouble. I have normally been able just to connect the printer and get it to work straight away
