Why does butter substitute taste so weird when it's gone off?

I just found an unopened tub of I Can't Believe It's Not Butter in the back of the fridge that was dated use by January. I tasted some and it has this weird kind of chemical, plasticky, perfumy undertaste. Years ago I had the same thing with some out of date Clover spread and it put me off that brand thereafter, so I know it's not unique to one brand.

It doesn't taste natural, like when cooking oil goes off it just tastes stale and musty, or butter, which I've found gets a kind of oniony taste. Anyone noticed the same or know what it is?

    It's because it's an artificial cobbled-together product.

Just buy butter instead. It doesn't go off for ages and even when it does it just goes sour/rancid perfectly naturally.
