    Two words

    Green Lantern

It did great numbers opening weekend, but died off very quickly afterwards.

    Also the amazing spiderman 2

great opening numbers, but we all know what happened there

Yes, but they were huge budget action films - dependent on making big bucks at the box office. I imagine Fifty Shades of Grey had a relatively modest budget. Even if no one else went to see it from now on, it's already made massive amounts of profit.

Currently number 1 in the UK, beating the rest of the top 10 COMBINED. I wouldn't say flop, but as with the UK music industry, selling loads doesn't imply that the product being sold is actually any good (not seen the film myself and have no intention of)

It's water-cooler cinema-when people meet their mates at work, it's the
current "Have you this film?" mentioned in conversation ("Gone Girl" had
a similar status at one point).

I agree that both were big budget movies, but the numbers did drop off after word of mouth got out. I think this will be the same

I think everyone wants to see what the fuss is about. Have to tip my hat at the publicity that this film has been subjected to. It was mentioned everywhere

It was never going to flop. The book is so bad that makes Mills and Boon read like Tolstoy and still sold millions. The type of person that goes to the cinema for this is not looking for quality,so why would they stay away if they bought into the book? And judging by the reviews if the film was even more inane, probably it would have pleased even more people.

I think people just have to accept the film is a hit, it hasn't flopped and people are going to see it no matter what. No point hating on it anymore.

The only person i've seen who's done well out of this whole thing is Dakota Johnson who's had praise for her performance in this and people seem to like what she brought to the role. Everyone else.....not so much!

What's Rita Ora like in this? Can she act?

I know it's only been out one day so far but the IMDB rating is currently at 3.3 with not very good reviews coming in. I keep reading about people saying it is nothing like the book and a lot left before the film ended.

I can imagine people will flock to see it just because of the name.
There is no real justice because we know that audiences will watch crap films and make them box office hits because it's happened so many times before, and that great films on their first release can be ignored by audiences.

I was looking forward to seeing Rita Ora but you get to see her twice in one family scene. I dont think you can tell from the two brief lines she had, however, she can speak French! ;-)

I have been twice (first time my friends kept talking all over it) then I went by myself. Being a teacher on half term can be a lonely existence when nobody else is about!

It's not Oscar worthy but I loved it. It's just escapism.

You know, the Harry Potter books/movies never appealed to me, but I accept that they appealed to millions of people & I don't feel the need to criticize the tastes of those people. Nor do I feel the need to give them a go, knowing that I probably won't enjoy them, & then harp on about how awful they are. Same goes for Lord Of The Rings.

Now before you jump down my throat to argue that the standard of writing in the FS trilogy cannot be compared to the HP or LOTR books, calm down - I know that. As do a lot of the fans. But regardless of the writing style, EL James told a story that for some reason, appealed to millions of people & kept them entertained. The movie was enjoyable; it had its cringey moments but it was also very funny in parts & Dakota Johnson was a pleasant surprise.

It seems to have become cool to bash everything Fifty Shades related. It must be annoying for the haters that it's been such a huge success. Whether people like it or not, this trilogy will continue to do well because:-

    (a) It already has a huge fanbase. HUGE.
    (b) Jamie Dornan & Dakota Johnson.
    (c) Clever marketing.

Well said. I notice the biggest critics are those who say "I have no intention of seeing the film but..." and damning and sneering at those who do see it - but not, of course, seeing it themselves. The film is different to the badly-written (but nevertheless entertaining and popular) books. The film has taken the best of what was there and created a complex and interesting romance where Christian is the one who yields in a lot of ways, and Anastasia is in fact the stronger one.

Not that those who criticise and sneer would know since, of course, they have no intention of seeing it :)

The trilogy will continue to do well because it is interesting, and people want to see what happens next

    Fully agree with this.

If anything I was just a little 'sneery' (or at least, I didn't take it that seriously) but after watching it I can only wholeheartedly disagree with the critics.

It's quite good taking it for what it is; a complex love story.

Firstly only saw this film to review it for myself .... at a private viewing.

Typical chick flick cheese fest with a bit of raunch thrown in! (Not a chick flick fan by the way)

Over rated and incredibly predictable.. having said that.. it was ok and didn't dislike it.

    Easy watching .... :) would give 5/10

I saw this today having never read the books and I really did not enjoy it at all. The audience laughed most of the way through it because the dialogue was just so, so cringeworthy and the pacing was ridiculously slow, I was bored halfway through it. Never mind the fact that Christian Grey is an absolutely detestable character and makes an appalling show of dominant/submissive relationships to a mainstream audience. The sex scenes were the best bit and I didn't find it pornographic at all, they were erotic and tastefully done IMO.

It won't be a flop because of people like me checking it out purely out of curiosity!!

    Not even these?

    The Lady Eve
    When Harry Met Sally
    It Happened One Night
    Mildred Pierce
    The Way We Were
    Imitation of Life
    The Princess Bride
    Amelie
    Picnic at Hanging Rock
    Breakfast at Tiffany’s
The Best Years of Our Lives
    I Want to Live
    Mean Girls
    Gun Crazy
    Four Weddings and a Funeral
    Stardust
    Terms of Endearment
    Party Girl
    Miss Congeniality
    Heathers
    Gone with the Wind
    Jerry Maguire
    Thelma and Louise
    Crazy Stupid Love

'Cos most film scholars are filing those - among others - under the so-called Chick Flick genre.

I would give it a 5/10 as well and I'm not a huge chick flick fan either. It was watchable- most of the dialogue was god awful! I cringed when he said "laters baby".

The best scene was probably when they were flying in the aircraft with the vaults song playing in the background and that's only because I love aviation.

    Soundtrack is pretty fantastic .

BB: it was a joke, mimicking his cringey brother, and then became "their" joke. ...

Was it also a joke in the book? I read the book years ago, I don't remember.

Rita Ora is barely even in it. She in for like a minute if even that. So can't really comment on her acting ability.

Is it correct that over 80% of the audiences are females ?

I suspect the only single blokes you'll see at 50SOE are "
"Men's Rights Activism" types who'll later use the film as "Exhibit A" in their
article "Why Bitc- I Mean Women-Don't Need Feminism". ;-)

The popularity of '50 shades' and 'Twilight' before it just makes you wonder what was all that feminist thing about? Women just want a rich guy to submit to.
