Paris: Very dirty, full of poo and expensive. Most attractions were a bit meh.
Falaraki: Realised when we went we were a bit too old for the type of bars they have there. Did have a fantastic meal in a local's restaurant though...

Calgary, the first time I ever went there. We had spent some time in Vancouver, before travelling across BC and Alberta, down through the Rockies to Banff, ending up in Calgary for the flight home. Compared to Vancouver, parts of which I found very relaxed and almost bohemian, Calgary felt very sterile and corporate, just soulless.

San Francisco. I know a lot of people, probably most people, love it. I didn't.

I liked the ferry ride across the Bay from Tiburon, seeing the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz, and a ride on a cable car. Then what? Nothing else to do except shops, Lombard Street and Fisherman's Wharf. Ugh, just totally boring. Yes, my fault almost certainly, but I still bitterly regret wasting a day in San Francisco that could have been spent in beautiful Yosemite.

San Francisco is probably one of my most favourite cities. I love the architecture and the views from every corner. Ive been 3 times and would go again tomorrow if it werent for the long flight (Im getting to hate long haul flights!). Yosemite was lovely indeed but I got bored there after a while. I loved Carmel though - I would live there if I could.

Strange how we all differ :)

Just remembered another one although not technically a tourist destination.

Reading Festival - If you're over 21 then it just makes you feel old....

    I didn't care for Paris.
Statue of Liberty was not as impressive as it looks.
Not disappointing, but the pyramids on TV always look like they are in the middle of the dessert.

Don't get me wrong Lauren, I assume that you meant the Statue of Liberty in New York harbour, but your post almost reads as if you weren't impressed by the one(s) in Paris.
    We have three in Paris.
The two most visited are the one on a little island in the Seine, near Pont de Grenelle, and the one in the Jardin du Luxembourg.
I'm sorry that you didn't care for Paris, try it again, I will ask my cousin Yves to send his son Didier to Gare de l'Est to watch for you, he is a younger, slightly taller, version of Johnny Depp, but has no facial hair.
Re-reading your post, it is obvious by the full stop after Paris, that you then moved on to the Statue in New York.

Nowhere, I know what kind of places I like and I know what to expect from most places. Are people complaining about LA because it's too spread out, soulless, dangerous etc? Or Las Vegas because it's a big shiny casino town in the middle of a desert? Was that a surprise?

I was lucky enough to do Route 66 ending in LA and it was by far the lowlight of the whole trip. Spread out, dingy, far far too many people and Venice beach was just full of dope heads and new age homeless types.
We side tripped to Vegas and I also loathed this place. I can see the appeal for some just not me, it felt cheap and tacky. I felt like i needed to be in the shower the whole time.

I am never disappointed by natural landscapes, it's where people are that tend to let me down.

Mine was Paphos in Cyprus basically because no one in our family of 4 enjoyed our holiday there and it cost a flaming fortune , it was just not as pretty or relaxing as other places we had been to and topped off with 2 teenagers moaning constantly it was like Chinese water torture with the knowledge that this expensive disaster of a holiday was our lot for the year.
I suppose it's like others have said if you're in the wrong mindset you probably won't enjoy places as much as you should.
We ditched the moaning teens and have had plenty of lovely holidays since then but I don't see us ever returning to Paphos.

Personally I think you have to look at that not in the terms of it`s physical size, but the size in terms of what it represents. It then becomes bigger than a big thing !

Was approx 8/9 years ago, was walking along the promenade and they have game stalls and stalls selling stuff, but the stallholders can be quite aggressive when you tell them "no thanks", I got comments like "how much for your wife" and "Chink b*****"
Tried going to a few pubs one evening and I gave up after getting hassled by groups of lagered up louts who felt it was their right to shout out "love you long time" and "to f*** off back to China" when I walked in with my white boyfriend.

@rds?', but that would make me as bad as them.
If it's any consolation, (I doubt it), I think that Chinese girls are among the most attractive females on the planet.

    Slough.

The most westerly you can go on a "London Bus".

Big Tesco is impressive, rest is not so good.

    I'd also add:

Tenerife (the South) - concrete, Brits abroad, time share selling dump. I have heard the North is nice though.
Beijing - very polluted and just a bit 'meh'.

Having just come back from a week based in South Tenerife I would say the trick is to hire a car and drive to other parts of the island - a lot :)

It's alright for cheap villas but it's a classic case of the expats and tourist trade ruining a place. Really if I wanted a full English breakfast or substandard curry and Chinese along with Irish themed bars I could have got that without the hassle of a 4 hour flight!

To me it was a crapper, more rundown version of Spain. Wasn't impressed with the food and found people tried to rip you off a lot. Worst European destination I have been too.

It's funny how people can have such different experiences in the same place- I love Portugal - we've been 5 times - I particularly like Carveiro.

I found Crete terrible the first time I went - we went to the west of the island and found locals to be unfriendly and trying to rip us off all the time. After a bit of persuasion we went back about 5 years later to a different resort and enjoyed it, although I wouldn't go again.

My most disappointing holiday was probably Corfu last year. We were in the middle of nowhere, the hotel had many problems such as a broken lift for all of the time we were there (a problem for us due to my OH's health issues), it rained most of the week and I ended up in hospital where the staff were rude and unhelpful.

I was really impressed with Portugal, I stayed in Lisbon for a music festival for a few days, and was a great festival (35 degrees, by the sea, no mud, great transport links.... So much better than Uk ones in my opinion).... Also Lisbon itself was very interesting and in parts rather stunning, and Cascais beach just a short train ride away,

Tunisia, quite intimidating at times when visiting the old town in Sousse, constant hassle from hawkers. Pretty grubby too, worst hotel we have ever been in.

You get drunken louts in all parts of the nation, including the south. :)

    What an endorsement.

I hated my time in Turkey. I have never felt so intimidated and threatened in my life. Got locked in shops and they wouldn't let us out until we bought something. Groped and called all the names under the sun. Spat at and sneered at. We weren't wearing anything inappropriate and not doing anything to offend people. I really do think this was just a bad experience though, because I know loads of people who love Turkey. But for me, because of that, i wouldn't go back

Agree with the Bondi Beach post, very small beach in an entirely built up area. The road is about 50 metres from the sea and it's a busy one.
Maybe the appeal is that it is a beach within a city?

St Croix. I got lectured at by my taxi driver for having the temerity to be a tourist. (I was all O_O at that. I was nice to him. Said please and thank you and everything.) The place I stayed at was okay but way expensive for what it was. And the main town when I finally wandered that direction, was surprisingly generic. I could have been any place.

Paris. Got up way too early to catch the Eurostar so I wasn't feeling great to begin with. The day was cold and grey. It was the wrong day of the week so the Louve was closed. We got hassled by Gypsies doing the lost ring con repeatedly around the Eifle Tower. But there was that awesome kitchen store so the day wasn't a complete shambles.

My dissapointment was Venice . Smelly , overcrowded , tacky , expensive and advertisment hoardings everywhere

I second this. It's a good looking place but it's over-expensive, it's hard to find good food and being on water 24/7 got annoying. We had our best meal at the Hard Rock Cafe :(
