I've always wondered if this was the original plan. Kathy's rape was already part of her back-story in the EE bible before the series began, and they hinted at Kathy having given a child up for adoption when she and Pauline were discussing options for Michelle when she announced her pregnancy around September 85
No, it wasn't. Julia smith states as much in 'The Inside Story' when she talks about the Press getting things really wrong. Whilst Kathy having been raped and had a daughter and sharon (or Tracy as originally named) being adopted were part of the original plan and we're revealed in the first 6 months on air, it was always planned that this had happened to Kathy when she was 14, long before she'd met Pete and he didn't know - hence Nick being able to blackmail her. However, sharon was always planned to be the same age as Michelle, Kelvin and Ian and therefore 3 or 4 years too young. It was, in Julia's own words, never possible dates wise and never, ever considered.

I never heard anyone say that at the time and there were other major characters too. Most of the main cast all got a good shot at major storylines.
