It only works once in a blue fart. Usually for comic relief.

The TARDIS does emit a perception filter, which makes the police box appear 'normal' wherever it lands. However, the field does not work if the objects surrounding it draw too much attention (or if people are searching specifically for it) - as the Tardis was near a market stall where people are looking our for something a bit different, could this have been the case last night?

Possibly a more plausible reason is that those with even minor telepathic abilities are immune to the perception filter - this could well have been the case last night seeing as have the people in Pompeii were becoming 'soothsayers' from being invaded by the Pyroviles.

The Chameleon Circuit is the circuit which changes the TARDIS's external appearance depending on it's surroundings, which has indeed been broken since the 1950s which is why it's stuck as a Police Box (although the Doctor has temporarily repaired it at times in the past).

It's also why all the bi-lingual road signs in Cardiff have dissapeared to make it look more like parts of London;)

good theory. I know the chameleon circuit thing is broken (which is why its stuck as a police box) but the perception filter is usually on form.

I always think that the tardis is more in control of space and time than the doctor - it always puts itself exactly where the doctor needs to be - whether or not the doctor wanted to be there! ie in the satan pit it put itself exactly where it needed to be to fall through the crevice so the doctor would find it once he defeated the demon. So maybe it switched off (or lowered) its perception filter in pompeii so that it would end up in that roman blokes house.

I like this theory. After all the Tardis landed in Pompeii when the Doctor thought it was actually Rome, and this kind of thing seems to happen all the time!
